Culture and Townscape

The Portal de San Miguel is one of the surviving gates in Tronchón’s medieval town wall. The Ayuntamiento is a stone building whose construction began in the 15th century and was completed in the 16th century.

The Church of Santa María Magdalena was built between the middle of the 16th century and the early 17th century. In 2002, it was declared a Bien de Interés Cultural monument.

Only a few sections of wall remain from the former Castillo de Tronchón. The Castillo is also included in the list of castles classified as Bienes de Interés Cultural.

Religious Sites and Tradition

The Ermita del Tremedal was built at the end of the 18th century and has a circular floor plan. It too was declared a Bien de Interés Cultural monument in 2002.

During Tronchón’s September festivities, a romería to the Ermita del Tremedal takes place on the first Sunday after 8 September. The procession of the Virgen del Tremedal follows the approximately half-kilometre-long route between the Church of Santa María Magdalena and the Ermita del Tremedal, located outside the town.

The route of the procession of the Virgen del Tremedal is lit with torches and candles and accompanied by the ringing of bells. This procession is considered to occur exclusively in Tronchón and has been documented since 1885.

Crafts, Cheese and Memory

Historically, making rabbit-hair hats was the craft and economic activity that employed the most people in Tronchón. The Oficina de Turismo features an illustrated exhibition showing the production and sale of these hats step by step.

Queso de Tronchón was considered famous throughout Spain in 1615, when the second part of Don Quijote de la Mancha was published. The Centro de Interpretación del queso de Tronchón explains the raw materials as well as the production and ageing of the cheese.

La Cabina de la Memoria is an old telephone booth that has been transformed into a memory installation. It offers a digital mailbox where personal memories can be left and memories from residents of Tronchón can be accessed.

Trails through Tronchón

The Paseo escultórico features sculptures depicting scenes from Tronchón’s past. The Senderos de La Horca lead to the Zafarech washhouse and the former gallows.

The PR-TE 74 Vuelta a las Ermitas de Tronchón is a 3.6-kilometre circular route starting at El Portalico.
