Culture and Architectural History

The Castillo de la Orden de Calatrava forms the oldest and fundamental part of the present-day town centre of Ráfales. The complex retains an entrance portal, the parade ground, a round arch, a Gothic window and coats of arms bearing the order’s cross.

The Portal de San Roque was part of the town wall, which was probably built in the 14th century, and served as one of the town gates of Ráfales. Ammonite fossils are embedded in the wall of the Portal de San Roque.

The parish church of Our Lady of the Assumption in Ráfales is a single-nave building in the Mediterranean Gothic style. Its construction took place in several building phases from the 14th to the 17th century.

The Casa Consistorial of Ráfales was built between 1575 and 1589 in the Renaissance style. It is part of the Ruta de las Cárceles del Mezquín-Matarraña.

Ráfales’s Plaza Mayor has a distinctive L-shaped layout. The square also features an 18th-century fountain built from ashlar blocks with a round arch.

The hermitage of San Rafael Arcángel in Ráfales is an 18th-century single-nave building with four bays and arched structures that are visible on the exterior through the buttresses.

Olive Oil and Local History

The Molí de l'Hereu is an 18th-century oil mill that remained in operation until the 1970s. The original machinery used in traditional olive oil production has been preserved inside.

This includes millstones, two presses from different periods and of different designs, settling tanks and other equipment for the entire production process. The Molí de l’Hereu has been transformed into a modern museographic space dedicated to the history and significance of olive oil.

Ráfales thus brings together several historical layers in its townscape: the town wall and portal point to medieval influences, while the church, town hall and hermitage represent different later building phases. The oil mill adds a separate chapter on the history of production to this architecture, while the two festivals mark the town’s annual calendar.

Events in the Square

The Feria de Recursos Naturales y Medio Ambiente de Ráfales takes place every year in the Plaza Mayor on the second weekend of November.

The Sant Rafalet festival takes place on the weekend closest to 24 October.
