Bezas: Rock Art, Pinares de Rodeno and Regional Cuisine

The protected landscape area of Pinares de Rodeno covers parts of the municipality of Bezas. Sandstone and conglomerate landforms of the Buntsandstein facies, together with stands of maritime pine (Pinus pinaster), shape this landscape area.

Culture and History

Bezas is home to the Las Tajadas complex, which contains prehistoric rock art sites. At the Abrigo de la Paridera de las Tajadas, a painted panel features zoomorphic figures and a hunting scene in the Levantine style.

The Abrigo de la Paridera de las Tajadas is one of the caves and rock shelters in Aragón containing rock art that, under Additional Provision II of Law 3/1999 of 10 March on Aragonese Cultural Heritage, are designated as Assets of Cultural Interest (Bienes de Interés Cultural).

Below Las Peñas de la Fuente lie the former «Las Minas» iron mines, with preserved tunnels and open-pit workings, ore bunkers and an ore-washing facility. Pico el Zorro is a well-preserved complex of remains between Campillo and Bezas, with hundreds of metres of trenches and several firing positions.

A restored mill that is currently open to visitors stands beside Balsa El Molino. Bezas is also home to the Cine-Museo and the visitor reception centre of the Parque Cultural de Albarracín.

Routes and Orientation

The GR 10 crosses the protected landscape area of Pinares de Rodeno, passes through the Las Tajadas or Dornaquejos gorge, is connected with the rock paintings and continues to the Dornaque Interpretation Centre. Different themes and route connections make it possible to consider nature, activity and culture separately when planning your own trip.

Regional Cuisine

Bezas’s traditional culinary heritage includes gachas, gazpachos, toasted soups, puches, cocido and garlic soups. Bezas has a wood-fired oven that produces bread, redondos, cañadas, magdalenas and tortas finas, supplying several places in the Sierra.
