Calomarde: Waterfall, Gorges and Trails Through Aragon

Calomarde is home to the Salto de Calomarde, a river-related attraction on the Fuente del Berro River. Here, the river has carved an approximately 20-metre-high waterfall into Jurassic limestone; the water falls into a deep pool hollow lined with continually expanding travertine formations. The river corridor at Salto de Calomarde connects juniper and pine forests with holm oaks and riparian vegetation along the riverbed.

Nature

Rollo de Calomarde is a natural bridge made of dolomite rock and lies at an elevated spot by the roadside as the remains of a former cave. At Salto de Calomarde, marked paths to the upper area and the foot of the waterfall begin at a large car park; the waterfall is visible from the car park.

The gorge section of the SL-TE 40 Barranco de la Hoz is equipped with several themed viewpoints. They provide information about birds, vegetation and geology. The SL-TE 40 runs through a gorge carved out by the Fuente del Berro River.

In the vicinity of Calomarde, the gorge of the Río Blanco upstream narrows through dolomite rock; there are limestone monoliths and caves there. Pools are common in the vicinity of the Fuente del Berro gorge, where various amphibians can be observed.

Hiking and Trails

The PR-TE 3 is a hiking trail in Aragon that leads from Tramacastilla to Calomarde through a dense pine forest. The Arcos de Calomarde y Hondo de Tramacastilla route is an easy hiking route along roads and paths marked as PR-TE 2.

The PR-TE 2 is a hiking trail in Aragon that leads from Royuela, alongside the Cascada Batida, to Calomarde and from there ends in Frías de Albarracín via the Fuente del Berro recreation area. The SL-TE 40 Barranco de la Hoz is also a hiking trail in Aragon and a 16.7-kilometre crossing between Calomarde and Frías de Albarracín.

Culture and Tradition

San Pedro Apóstol is a masonry-built church with two naves and a tower at the western end. Its east wall contains two stone blocks from a Roman funerary monument. An inscription on one of the stone blocks embedded in the church indicates a date from the end of the 1st century AD onwards.

The Gothic hermitage of San Gil Abad contains a Roman tomb associated with the Terencia family. At the same time, the hermitage is dedicated to the patron saint of Calomarde.

Calomarde’s three-day patron saint celebrations in honour of San Gil Abad take place from 19 to 21 August. They are scheduled so that they do not coincide with the celebrations in the neighbouring towns of Frías and Royuela. On the final day, the comida del toro takes place; the celebrations end with Vaquilla performances in Calomarde’s bullring.
