Culture and history

The Ermita de Santa Bárbara offers privileged views of Bronchales, its pine forests and the plains of Pozondón and Ródenas. In Bronchales itself, the Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la Asunción was built at the beginning of the 17th century. The present-day building of the Ermita de San Cristóbal dates from the 18th century.

The Ermita de San Roque is a rectangular chapel made of irregular masonry, with a pitched roof covered with tiles. The Ermita de San Antonio appears as a very small rectangular oratory or chapel, with masonry walls and a hipped roof covered with Arab tiles. A mosaic depicting Calvary is set into its exterior wall on the Gospel side.

The Roman past is also part of the townscape: the important pottery workshop of El Endrinal in Bronchales was active throughout the 1st century. It distributed a characteristic series of Terra Sigillata, produced in moulds, covered with a red slip and often decorated with geometric and figurative depictions of deities from the Roman pantheon. In connection with the Camino del Cid, it is reported that the Cid’s followers spent the night in Bronchales on their journey through the Albarracín area.

Nature and landscape

Bronchales lies within the Montes Universales wildlife reserve, administered by the Government of Aragón. The SL-TE 46 route, Las Celadas, runs nearby as a 3.7-kilometre circular trail. It is listed as taking one hour and involving 50 metres of ascent; the starting point is 3 kilometres from Bronchales, at the junction of the A-1511 and A-1512 roads.

Las Celadas passes through a karst limestone landscape with a deep sinkhole, several dolines and two themed viewpoints dedicated to geology and flora. The route length, stated duration and ascent are provided as separate figures for planning purposes.

Up to 39 of the 58 catalogued edible mushroom species occur within the municipality of Bronchales. The area lies within the Sierra de Albarracín mycological gathering area; an appropriate official permit is required to collect mushrooms.

For mountain-bike tours, the BTT Bronchales Sierra Alta climbs to the 1,854-metre-high summit of Sierra Alta. Stage 11 of the GR 10 from Bronchales to Orihuela del Tremedal enters an attractive Scots pine forest after the Collado de los Sevillanos. Further on in the nature calendar, the red deer rut takes place at the beginning of autumn; every year, it attracts visitors from all over Spain to Bronchales.

Festivals and local traditions

Bronchales’s patron-saint festivals take place from 14 to 19 August in honour of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción and San Roque. The tradition of the Sopeta has existed in Bronchales for more than fifty years. On 16 August, a pilgrimage to the Ermita de San Roque takes place to celebrate San Roque, the town’s patron saint. During it, local residents carry the statue of the saint in procession from the church to the chapel.

The Mayos singing tradition revived in Bronchales takes place on 30 April and was reinstated for tourism and festive purposes. On the second Sunday in July, the Romería de San Cristóbal follows, with a mass, the blessing of vehicles and a communal meal.

Since 2015, the Carabolas Festival for puppet theatre and clowns of the Sierra de Albarracín has been held in Bronchales every last weekend of August. The various dates distribute the local traditions, religious celebrations and cultural events across spring, summer and the beginning of autumn.

Bronchales is listed on the Las Tres Taifas hiking, cycling and BTT mountain-bike routes of the Camino del Cid. On weekdays, there is a public bus connection from Bronchales to Teruel, departing from Plaza de la Fuente.
