Culture and History

The Torre de los Moros in Fuentespalda is one of the castles classified as Bienes de Interés Cultural, meaning assets of special cultural interest. An open chapel was built above the Portal-capilla de San Antonio during the Baroque period. The Portal-capilla is apparently one of four gates in Fuentespalda’s walled medieval complex.

The San Miguel Hermitage is a church in the vernacular Baroque style that, according to the inscription on its façade, was built in 1787. On 29 September, the feast day of Saint Michael, the residents of Fuentespalda make a pilgrimage to the hermitage; afterwards, the 18-year-old young people distribute chocolate, Madalenas and wine.

La Torreta de Fuentespalda is an exhibition centre. The ground floor explores its former use as a prison, while the upper floors house exhibitions on Iberian culture and other art exhibitions. The Torreta was originally part of the town wall and offers a viewpoint.

The medieval cemetery of Fuentespalda contains fourteen disc-shaped grave stelae embedded in the walls beside the parish church. Most of these medieval grave stelae are decorated on both sides: the front features a cross within a simple circular border, while the back displays interlaced patterns, also within a simple circular border.

Vila Vella in Fuentespalda is a Roman settlement dating from the 1st to the 3rd century. The town hall was built in the late 16th century and houses a historical archive with documents dating from the 13th century. Fuentespalda’s water complex comprises two fountains, a livestock trough and a washhouse.

The Vall dels Figuerals near Fuentespalda features rock paintings that have been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Church of the Sanctuary of the Virgin of Balma lies in the wider regional area.

Landscape

The peaks of la Muela, Hereu and Encanadé are located in the area around Fuentespalda. The elevations around Fuentespalda offer viewpoints with panoramic views over traditional agricultural land and extensive forests.

Trails and Activities

The PR-TE 158 route to the San Miguel Hermitage is catalogued as a Sendero Turístico de Aragón and starts at the picnic area on Calle Serreta in Fuentespalda. Around 1.5 km after the start, the trail enters a dense pine forest. The different trail sections and landscape areas can be considered separately when planning.

Fuentespalda has an equipped Via Ferrata for vertical routes with views over the Matarraña landscape. The Matarraña Bike Park is a mountain biking facility and public infrastructure with free access and year-round operation, 365 days a year.
