Albentosa between Castillo, Viaduct and River Trails

The Castillo de Albentosa is located on the summit of a hill near the town and is accessible exclusively from the side facing the town. Culture

The Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de los Ángeles was built at a newly established site in the second half of the 16th century and completed around 1610. Its architecture combines elements of the Gothic tradition with the formal language of the Renaissance; inside, it has star-shaped rib vaults and a polygonal chancel. Nearby are the Casas del Concejo, a building with a pointed arch in the Gothic tradition.

The Castillo de Albentosa is protected as a Bien de Interés Cultural and assigned to the Zona Arqueológica protection category. The approximately 35-metre-long square fortress area has no external towers. Inside, the complex is largely destroyed; only the outer walls made of irregular stones joined with mortar have survived. These were reinforced by round wall towers, of which only one remains.

The Posición defensiva Castillo-La Nevera is located on the right bank of the Albentosa River next to the castle and makes use of the rocky steep slope formed by the river. It consists of trenches adapted to the terrain, with breastworks built in sections from earth and dry stone, as well as shelters in natural or excavated depressions. During the offensive of the rebel army towards Valencia, which began on 13 July 1938, the position played a role in defending the river crossing to Albentosa and the Ojos Negros-Sagunto mining railway line.

Trails and Landscape

Stage 3 of the PR-TE 7 begins in the upper part of Albentosa, crosses the Vía Verde de Ojos Negros and the railway line that is still in operation, and then reaches the town of Los Mases. In the Horcajo area, it connects with the valley of the Mijares River, follows the river, runs alongside the small Embalse de los Toranes reservoir and reaches the La Fonseca Bridge.

The Viaducto de Albentosa is 180 metres long, rises 40 metres above the river and has seven arches. The former railway track at the Viaducto de Albentosa is now part of the Caminos Naturales network and can be used by hikers and cyclists. Metal railings have been installed on both sides of the viaduct, allowing it to be crossed.

The section of the Camino Natural Vía Verde de Ojos Negros in the province of Teruel passes through Albentosa on its route from Ojos Negros to Barracas. The Camino Natural is suitable for hikers, cyclists and people with reduced mobility. The Albentosa-Barracas stage also includes a rest area with tables, benches and bicycle racks. It passes through Mediterranean mountain country with specimens of the Portuguese oak (Quercus faginea), Spanish juniper (Juniperus thurifera) and holm oak (Quercus ilex).

Different trail lengths, time estimates and activity types help you compare the trails according to your preferred focus. The “Ríos Mijares y Albentosa” cycle loop begins and ends in Albentosa, is 22 kilometres long and has an estimated duration of 2 hours and 15 minutes. The Ecosenda Embalse de los Toranes is 3.3 kilometres long, has a low difficulty level, runs from the Puente de la Fonseca to the connection with the Ecosenda de los Manantiales, and is suitable for hiking, horse riding and cycling.

Nature

Ojos de Babor consists of clear water outlets enclosed by a stone structure that feed the Mijares River. The La Escaleruela spring has two small stone arches and carries abundant water, supplying the river with a high flow.

The Sabinar en la Fuen del Cepo juniper grove is one of Albentosa’s scenic places of interest. The holm oak stands south of the municipality of Albentosa are also among the municipality’s scenic places of interest. The Ecosenda Los Puentes is 6.8 kilometres long, of medium difficulty and runs between Albentosa and the La Escaleruela spring; it is designated for hiking and horse riding.

The Ermita de la Cueva Santa in Los Mases de Albentosa is one of Albentosa’s significant architectural monuments. The Ermita de la Fuen del Cepo is one of Albentosa’s significant architectural monuments.
