Discover Aliaga: Geology, Trails and Cultural Heritage

The Parque Geológico de Aliaga was founded in 1993 as Spain's first geological park. It is one of the geological sites of worldwide interest included in the selection of the “Second 100 Places.” For visitors, geological formations, informative interpretation, historical traces and waterside trails come together here.

Geology

The La-Olla anticline, with its vertical axis, lies next to the built-up area of Aliaga. At the Centro de Visitantes of the Parque Geológico de Aliaga, an exhibition complements guided visits with information panels, models, fossils and rocks, as well as interactive games and audiovisual material. In the geology room of the Centro de Visitantes, the space is used for lectures, workshops and group work as part of geology courses and geological field practicals. The different options can be compared as separate areas of focus when planning your visit. The range therefore extends from observing a striking rock formation to educational and professionally oriented offerings.

Culture and History

The Castillo de la Encomienda is located on a hill immediately above Aliaga. Three tiered sections of wall and remains of the keep can still be seen. Visits to the Centro de Interpretación de la Minería de Santa Bárbara can be arranged by telephone at 620 598 865. The castle complex and mining centre offer two different historical perspectives that can be considered independently of one another.

Waterside Trails

The PR-TE 10, Sendero Fluvial del Guadalope, begins next to the astronomical observatory in the Santa Bárbara district and leads over small footbridges to the vicinity of Aliaga's town centre. The Hoz Mala section of the PR-TE 10 crosses bridges and footbridges to the Molino de la Tosca.

Aliaga can also be explored by bicycle: a branch of the BTT-TE/06-Route 17 begins in Calle San Antonio and reaches, after approximately 1.3 kilometres, the car park at the start of the river route with its footbridges. Another branch of the BTT-TE/06-Route 17 leads to the Cascada de La Tamborera, a waterfall with a pool. For planning your day, a riverside trail, the Hoz Mala section and the two cycling destinations can be considered different areas of focus. Thus, the waterside trails and cycling branches offer different modes of transport and types of destination side by side, rather than forming a single fixed route.
