Landscape and Nature

Valdecuenca lies on a limestone plateau in the headwaters of several watercourses that form part of the Barranco Melero drainage basin. In the southern part of the municipality of Valdecuenca, there are numerous river gorges that cross the La Muela area.

The predominant vegetation is juniper, forming extensive woodland. The Mirador de Santa Bárbara offers panoramic views of forested mountains. Recreation areas with shelters, fire pits, tables and trees have also been set up in Valdecuenca.

Culture and History

The Church of San Nicolás was built at the end of the 16th or beginning of the 17th century. The Ermita de San Roque had only just been built in 1618. The Ermita de la Purísima is thought to have been built at around the same time as the Ermita de San Roque; its single-nave interior is covered by a ribbed vault.

Trenches that formed part of the Peña La Cruz defensive line have been preserved on all the peaks surrounding the village. Route 10 includes a visit in Valdecuenca to the Church of San Nicolás and the Iberian settlement of Cerro del Molino.

Trails and Routes

Route 5, “El Cabriel y el Pico Javalón”, passes through Valdecuenca and runs through the southern part of the Sierra de Albarracín; it can be combined with drives and short walks. The PR-TE 5 hiking trail runs from Albarracín via Saldón and Valdecuenca. In Valdecuenca, a guided tour of the Barranco Melero with an ascent to Jabaloyas is planned.

For travel planning, drives with short walks, the planned guided tour and the cultural stops on Route 10 can be presented as distinct formats alongside one another.

The focus of the routes described therefore differs clearly: Route 5 combines crossing Valdecuenca with the southern part of the Sierra de Albarracín and short walks, while PR-TE 5 links several places along a hiking route. The guided tour through the Barranco Melero with an ascent to Jabaloyas constitutes a separate format within this offering. Route 10, on the other hand, focuses on the church and settlement as cultural stops.

Festivals

In mid-August, San Nicolás de Bari, the patron saint of the village, is celebrated with a procession. During it, his image is carried from the Ermita de la Purísima and returned there after the festivities.
