Aguaviva: Santísimo Misterio, Bergantes Valley and Holiday Apartments

Aguaviva celebrates the Santísimo Misterio every year on 28 August. The miracle of the Corporales of Aguaviva dates back to the 15th century; the tradition of the Santísimo Misterio commemorates a church fire in 1475 during which, according to the traditional account, a silver cross and four consecrated hosts survived—three small ones and one large one.

Culture and history

For the Feast of Saint Augustine, the residents cover the streets with ephemeral carpets made of colored sawdust on 28 August. The procession carpets of Aguaviva were included in the 2024 declaration of the procession carpets in Aragón as an intangible cultural asset of cultural interest.

The Misterio chapel of the church has a Greek-cross floor plan and a slender brick cupola. The parish church of San Lorenzo is a building erected in the 17th century.

Four kilometers from the center of Aguaviva, the Puente de Cananillas crosses the Bergantes River; it connects the municipal area of Aguaviva with that of La Ginebrosa. The present-day Puente de Cananillas was built in 1622 in the rural Renaissance style.

The Feria de Productos y Servicios del Medio Rural in Aguaviva is currently focused on agriculture, livestock farming and various products from rural areas, and currently takes place on the third weekend of November.

Nature and trails

The Bergantes Valley features potholes, caves, pools and natural beaches created by the river. The Cananillas bathing area is recognized by the Ministry of Health for the condition in which it is maintained and the quality of its water. The Río Bergantes Site of Community Importance covers 241 hectares in the municipalities of Aguaviva and La Ginebrosa.

The Molino harinero de Aguaviva flour mill is located in the floodplain of the Guadalope, was built in 1738 and was later converted into a power station.

A hiking trail crosses the Bergantes River via the historic Puente de Cananillas and reaches Aguaviva. The fourth stage of the trail ends in Aguaviva, where the fifth stage also begins. The Cerro de las Calderas circular trail in Aguaviva is 12.1 km long; the walking time is 3 hours and 45 minutes. Another hiking trail runs through a protected natural area in the west of the municipal area to the mill of Aguaviva.

Regional products

Coquetes, also known as tortas de alma, are traditionally made pastries produced by hand in Aguaviva. In Aguaviva, you can sample excellent horticultural products as well as pork products such as ham, cured meats and preserves.

From July to October, a temporary tourist information point is planned in Aguaviva at the Edif Usos Múltiples, with its entrance on Calle Trascasa. It is open on Friday afternoons, Saturday mornings and afternoons, and Sunday mornings.
