In the Iglesia de Santiago, an architectural detail already tells part of Montalbán’s military history: the gallery above the side chapels served military purposes because the church originally belonged to the Order of Santiago.

Culture and History

Jaime I stayed at the Castillo de la Encomienda for some time to prepare the conquest of Valencia. Remains of the walls and the remains of three towers have been preserved. The Castillo de la Encomienda is protected as a Bien de Interés Cultural.

The Torreón de la Cárcel, also known as the Portal de Daroca, forms Montalbán’s most significant gate and includes a gate tower. The restored Torreón de la Cárcel is currently used as an exhibition hall.

River Landscape and Peñarroyas

The Paraje de Peñarroyas del Río Martín is a site of fluvial interest in the Peñarroyas district of the municipality of Montalbán. In Peñarroyas, leave the car at the entrance to the village and continue on foot along a route marked as part of the Parque Cultural del Río Martín.

There are rock paintings along the route between Peñarroyas and the viewpoint. In Montalbán, the Centro de Interpretación de la Geología y Espeleología is also included in the Parque Cultural del Río Martín.

Landscape and Trails

The PR-TE 99 A, Ruta de la Muela de Montalbán, climbs to the summit of the Muela at 1,294 metres and passes several viewpoints. The length, duration, ascent and descent of the marked routes provide different points of comparison for your planning.

Skies and Geology

The Observatorio de Montalbán enables observation of the night sky and the sun. The observatory includes a digital planetarium where films and photographs on astronomical subjects are projected.

The programme at the Observatorio de Montalbán includes lectures, courses, workshops, astronomy days and exhibitions. Cultural history, geology, hiking routes and astronomy therefore stand alongside one another in Montalbán as clearly distinct themes.

The PR-TE 99 B, Ruta del río Ancho, is a 10.8-kilometre circular hike with a stated duration of 3 hours and 10 minutes, 230 metres of ascent and 235 metres of descent. The GR 262, Stage 03 from Montalbán to Peñarroyas, is a 7.8-kilometre crossing with a stated duration of 2 hours and 10 minutes, 135 metres of ascent and 200 metres of descent.

Montalbán forms half of the Montalbán circular route. The Montalbán circular route, also known as the Anillo de Montalbán, is a road cycling tourism route that follows in El Cid’s footsteps through Huesa and Montalbán.
