Torres de Albarracín – Nature, Culture and Holiday Apartments

The PR-TE 1 to Torres de Albarracín follows marked trails through two gorges, past a livestock watering trough and through a pine forest before reaching the road to Torres de Albarracín.

Nature

Torres de Albarracín lies in the Sierra de Albarracín in the valley of the Guadalaviar River. The landscape includes an extensive huerta, juniper stands and large pine forests. North of the town centre is an outcrop of Rodeno sandstone with characteristic towers, gorges and rounded forms.

At Fuente de la Veguilla by the river and near the bridge to Torres de Albarracín, there is a recreational area with benches and tables. The trees along the riverbank provide shade; the site is suitable for resting or having a snack. The different landscape forms and types of paths can be easily compared when planning individual days.

Trails and Activities

Torres de Albarracín has signposted paths and routes for hiking, horse-riding activities and cycle tourism. The linear “Ruta del la ermita de San Roque” has its own distinctive route character: it is 1.5 kilometres long and leads from the town hall square in Torres de Albarracín to the Ermita de San Roque. The path is wide and well surfaced and is also suitable for pushchairs.

Torres de Albarracín also has an adventure park with zip lines and courses among the trees. Short walking paths, marked routes and the adventure park thus offer different forms of activity alongside one another.

Culture

The parish church of San Miguel is a Baroque religious building dating from 1742. It has a central nave and two side aisles; its three-storey tower has an octagonal upper section. The building is constructed of Rodeno rubble masonry.

The Ferrería del Albarracín in Torres de Albarracín was built in 1648 and operated until the mid-19th century. The former Harinera del Carmen was converted into a usable space.

The Paso de la Fuente de la Umbría is located near the hamlets of Royuela and Torres de Albarracín. It was one of the main transhumance routes crossing the Albarracín area longitudinally.

Festivals and Cuisine

Around 16 July, Torres de Albarracín celebrates the festival in honour of the Virgen del Carmen with a Mass, procession, traditional flag-waving, a communal meal, competitions and traditional bull festivities. On 29 September, the festival in honour of San Miguel follows, with religious celebrations, dancing, traditional bull festivities and other leisure activities.

Every year on 16 August, a pilgrimage sets out from Torres de Albarracín to the Ermita de San Roque. It includes a Mass, prayers, the singing of the Gozos in honour of the saint and a communal meal.

The traditional cuisine of Torres de Albarracín is based, among other things, on Jamón de Teruel and Ternasco de Aragón, both with certified quality. Other ingredients include produce from the huerta, wild mushrooms and game.
