Terriente – Historic Townscape, Culture and Trails

Terriente has one of the most distinctive historic townscapes in the Sierra de Albarracín.

Culture

The Iglesia del Salvador in Terriente was built in several phases during the 16th century and completed around 1587; it preserves remains of the medieval church it replaced. As a Late Gothic building, the Iglesia del Salvador has a single-nave layout, a flat-ended chancel and side chapels between the buttresses. The church is classified as listed cultural heritage of Aragón. The present Ermita del Rosario near Terriente was built in the first quarter of the 18th century and preserves a small 18th-century altarpiece dedicated to the Immaculate Conception. Cerro de la Tejería is an archaeological site with a settlement dating from the Iberian period. A watchtower outside Terriente is said to have formed part of the defensive line between Aragón and Castile. A recently restored tower or dovecote near Terriente resembles the remains of a fortification.

Townscape

Terriente’s livestock-farming town centre is arranged around Plaza del Boticario and Plaza Mayor. The traditional houses in Terriente are made of masonry with dressed stone at the corners and openings, tiled roofs and decorated pointed arches. Terriente’s historic textile industry included two fulling mills and two grain mills powered by the Algarbe River. In the past century, 20,000 varas of cordellat fabric were produced in Terriente. Terriente’s 16th-century town hall has two floors, a hipped roof and, on the main façade, a wooden balcony with a window featuring a straight lintel and its own protective roof.

Nature

El Algarbe is about 4 km from Terriente, in a reforested pine forest with numerous springs and a lagoon bordered by a broad meadow. El Algarbe is crossed by the Arroyo de Los Molinares. At the end of the route through the Cabriel Valley, El Algarbe serves as a resting place for eating and relaxing.

Hiking

For planning purposes, this route presents the trail length and the stated duration as two separate figures. The PR-TE 3 from Bronchales to Masegoso is a 40.3-kilometre crossing with a stated duration of 12 hours and 10 minutes; the route reaches Terriente before ending in El Masegoso. The Government of Aragón has catalogued and inventoried the PR-TE 3 as a tourist resource.

Festivals

Terriente celebrates its patron-saint festivals on 2 July in honour of the Virgen de la Visitación; the procession takes place the following day. The district of El Villarejo in Terriente holds its patron-saint festivals on 13 June.
