Discover Saldón: Nature, Trails and Culture

The Camino Viejo de Saldón a Bezas runs through the Sabinar de Saldón and the protected Pinares de Rodeno area. The approximately 10.5-kilometre linear route mostly follows the former connecting path between the two towns and is fully marked with signs and information boards indicating the route.

Nature

In the Sabinar de Saldón, the Spanish juniper species Juniperus thurifera grows in both tree and shrub form; its stands are very well preserved, both in the areas dominated by it and together with Scots pines, black pines, holm oaks and downy oaks. The Sabinar de Saldón is integrated into the Site of Community Importance Sabinares de Saldón y Valdecuenca (code ES2420136), designated as a protected area within the Natura 2000 network. The mammals found in the Sabinar de Saldón include deer, roe deer and wild boar.

The Sabina Peseto is a unique tree; it reaches a height of 12.5 metres and has a crown 14 metres in diameter. The Mirador de El Cabezo above Saldón offers panoramic views of the surroundings of the sabinar and the protected area of El Rodeno. La Vega lies in the lower-lying area around Saldón; it contains cereal fields whose water drains towards Valdecuenca.

Trails

The Cueva de la Artesa route is an 11.5-kilometre circular route with 140 metres of positive elevation gain. It leads to a small grotto that can be viewed from the outside but cannot be entered because of its location several metres above the path.

The Los Poblados route is an approximately 6.2-kilometre circular route with around 89 metres of elevation gain, suitable for hiking or cycling with family and children; it runs entirely along easily walkable paths, is marked with signs and trail markers along its entire length, and leads to two Iberian settlements in the Sabinar de Saldón. Culture

Traditional architecture in Saldón is characterised by whitewashed masonry and round-arched portals made of dressed stone; examples of these are particularly numerous on Calle Baja. On 24 August, the feast day of Saint Bartholomew, and during the patron-saint festivities, a pilgrimage takes place to a hermitage. Regional Route 5, “El Cabriel y el Pico Javalón”, passes through Terriente, El Vallecillo, Toril, Masegoso, Jabaloyas, Valdecuenca and Saldón before returning to Terriente.

Getting there

The road journey from Teruel to Saldón follows the A-1513 and then the TE-9002 into the town.
