Utrillas: Mining History, Museums and Trails

At Pozo Santa Bárbara in Utrillas, a museum-style visitor route leads through the various elements of the former mining operation. The park’s mining experience is offered aboard the original Hulla Nº1 steam locomotive from 1903.

In the centre of Utrillas is the Museo de la Ciencia y la Arqueología Minera de Utrillas. The Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la Natividad is a 17th-century parish church; its construction follows the model of a late-17th-century Baroque temple. The Museo de los Utensilios Mineros is located at Pozo Santa Bárbara in the Parque Minero. Railway and Mining

The Tren Minero offers a 2.5-kilometre journey between Pozo Santa Bárbara and the Museo de la Ciencia. Depending on the departure time, the journey may begin at Pozo Santa Bárbara or at the Museo de la Ciencia. The BTT TE/06 Ruta 4 reaches Utrillas via the former Lavaderos mining railway line.

Trails and Landscape

The Camino Natural Vía Verde “Ruta del Carbón” follows the route of the disused Utrillas–Zaragoza railway line. The section of the Vía Verde between Utrillas and Ventas de Muniesa has gentle gradients and wide paths. The rest area at Estación Utrillas-Montalbán has three picnic tables and two bicycle racks. The BTT TE/06 Ruta 4 leads to a viewpoint on the upper part of the Sierra de San Just. Around Utrillas, there are various signposted and prepared trails, including PRTE 41, PRTE 45 and the former railway line that transported coal to the washing plants.
