Discover Villarquemado: Culture, Stories and Nature

A prominent part of Villarquemado's architectural heritage is the parish church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción. It was built between 1694 and 1703.

Culture

The church is home to the Órgano de la Iglesia Parroquial de Nuestra Señora de la Asunción, an instrument made by the organ builder Fermín Usarralde Lorz, who came from Pamplona. The instrument dates approximately from the last third of the 18th century. The Government of Aragón supported its restoration in 2006, 2007 and 2008.

Villarquemado's main festivities take place on the second weekend of September in honour of the town's patron saint, San Roque. Villarquemado also preserves the traditional cultivation and use of saffron.

The Agramaderos were used to beat and process dried hemp stalks in order to separate the plant fibres from the woody part. Several walls and stone structures have been preserved; they show how this traditional work was organised.

Experiences

In the Un Paseo de Cuento park, children walk through the park in search of characters and enter the little houses from the stories. The park also includes a maze, a giant chess game, an area for exchanging books, and a stage for storytelling and other children's activities.

This provides different formats for planning the day: cultural indoor spaces, traces of traditional crafts, playful stops, historic routes and nature observation.

Landscape and History

The Trincheras de Cerro del Piojo represent the restoration of a small section of a large defensive line that extended for several kilometres from Teruel and Celadas towards the Jiloca Valley.

The Trincheras can be reached via the paved Camino de la Carrasca from Villarquemado cemetery. From the Medio Monte picnic area, a signposted path leads left to the site; the path can be driven by car as far as the trenches. From there, there are extensive views across the valley.

The combination of the route, historic site and expansive views can be given a different emphasis when planning your own itinerary than a visit to a playful park or time spent in a natural area.

The local pages for Peñarroya De Tastavíns, Bronchales, Valjunquera, Orihuela Del Tremedal, Molinos, Celadas, Arens De Lledó and Fuentes Calientes are also available.

Anyone comparing a holiday apartment in Villarquemado can check travel dates, room category and cancellation policies side by side on the respective offer pages. The cultural, recreational and nature-focused attractions can be considered separately.

Nature

Laguna del Cañizar lies between Villarquemado and Cella. The ecologically restored lagoon has high ecological value and is particularly suitable for birdwatching. Easy walks, nature photography and sustainable tourism are also among the activities associated with it.
