Arens de Lledó lies in the valley of the Algars River, with the town centre directly beside the river. The municipality includes vineyards, olive groves, almond trees and Mediterranean woodland.
When choosing a holiday apartment in Arens De Lledó, you can compare travel dates, room categories and cancellation policies on the offer pages. Depending on your travel plans, these fields can be weighted differently; you can consider water, trails and culture as separate focal points.
Nature Along the Algars
El Galeró is a bathing spot on the Algars where a natural pool forms in summer when the water level is higher.
The Ruta de les Fonts is a circular trail through the gorges of Font Soberana and Valdecretas, also known as Vall-de-Queretes. It passes through an environment of vineyards, almond trees, olive trees and Mediterranean woodland. The Ruta de los Túmulos Funerarios Íberos is signposted and partially adapted for visitors with disabilities.
The Balcó de l'Algars is a viewpoint overlooking the valley of the Algars River, the town and the Puertos de Tortosa-Beceite. From Arens de Lledó, it can be reached on foot via a path of approximately one kilometre along the road towards Calaceite.
Culture and History
The Portal de Baix was built in 1788 as part of the former town wall. The Iglesia de la Asunción is a Gothic church from the 14th century and is protected as a Bien de Interés Cultural in the Monument category.
A large bricked-up doorway with a weathered coat of arms of the Franciscan Order has been preserved in the former monastery building. The remains of the former Franciscan monastery of San Francisco, also known as Lo Convent, are located on the upper edge of Arens de Lledó; one façade is on the Plaza de la Iglesia, and the building was constructed in the 16th century. The former monastery of San Francisco was converted into three private apartments.
The Ermita de San Hipólito, also known as Sant Pol, is an 18th-century building that was probably erected in 1711. A signposted and well-maintained path leads to it, branching off from the road between Arens de Lledó and Calaceite. On the first Saturday in May, an annual pilgrimage takes place there, featuring a mass, a blessing of the municipality, refreshments and a communal meal.
The Fiestas Mayores of Arens de Lledó take place from 12 to 15 August in honour of San Hipólito, also known as Sant Pol, and Nuestra Señora de la Asunción. The programme includes orchestras, activities, costumes, tracas, Correfocs and a communal dinner.
Townscape
The town hall of Arens de Lledó is a Renaissance building on the town’s main square, constructed in the 17th century. The ground floor once housed a small municipal prison, which was converted into a barbershop in the 20th century.
Casa de la Tía Soledad o l'Escolà is a five-storey modernist residential building. Its façade features caryatids on the lintels of the first-floor balconies, as well as plant-inspired ornamentation that changes across the individual floors. The Solanar has five pointed-arch openings that ventilated the attic, where fruit and cured meat were dried.
Trails and Local Places
Stage 12 of the Camino Natural Matarraña–Algars passes through the town centre of Arens de Lledó and begins at Lo Raig, a waterfall that forms part of the local irrigation channel. Lo Raig was formerly used as a watering place for livestock and as a washing place for clothes.
The town-centre variant of Stage 12 leads via Calle del Río to the Algars and crosses the river on a concrete ford built for this purpose. The outer variant is recommended for cyclists because, after crossing the river, it avoids uneven, rocky terrain.
The Molí de la Vila is located on the left bank of the Algars River. Preserved there are an entrance facing the Algars with a round arch, as well as stone remains of a press inside.
