Jabaloyas between Cultural Heritage, Nature and Stargazing

The village of Jabaloyas was declared a Bien de Interés Cultural in 1982. The protected historic village ensemble preserves the street layout and architecture typical of a settlement shaped by livestock farming; it essentially developed between the 14th and 16th centuries.

For planning purposes, the themes can be organised according to your interests: historic architectural forms, geology, stargazing, easy hiking trails and local tradition stand as separate areas of focus. Cultural, nature-related and active days do not have to be combined into a fixed itinerary.

Culture

Construction of the Iglesia de la Asunción began in the 15th century and was completed in the 16th century. The religious buildings also include the Ermita de la Virgen de los Dolores, a Gothic-Mudéjar chapel from the 17th century. Its nave is covered by a wooden structure, while the apse has a polygonal form.

Among the secular buildings is the Casa de la Sirena: the two-storey Gothic building has an Alfiz portal and a window with tracery. The Casa de los Diezmos dates from the early 16th century and has a two-bay loggia on the lower floor.

Nature

Jabaloyas's natural heritage is part of the Reserva de la Biosfera del Valle del Cabriel Biosphere Reserve. A small star park is located on the summit of Pico Javalón; Jabaloyas is the only settlement in the Sierra de Albarracín with a Starlight certification for stargazing.

Near the centre of Jabaloyas are fossil coral reefs that are approximately 155 million years old and have been recognised as a Lugar de Interés Geológico de Aragón. For planning purposes, you can distinguish here between stargazing, geology and hiking destinations without mixing the themes.

Hiking and Activities

The route to the Observatorio Astronómico is an easy hiking trail measuring 7.85 kilometres. It begins at the Frontón in Jabaloyas, is considered suitable for families and allows stargazing from the Javalón.

The route to the Pozas de la Balsilla is 8.8 kilometres long and is also an easy hiking trail starting from Jabaloyas. It follows the PR-TE-5 and leads to the pools in the Las Balsillas gorge.

The different trail lengths and destination themes give you a concrete basis for comparing the two routes according to your preferred daily rhythm. Another activity is crossing the Via Ferrata Cueva Perotes.
