La Fresneda: Culture, History and the PR-TE-163 Hiking Trail

Since September 1983, La Fresneda has been designated a historic-artistic ensemble. When planning your trip, you can weigh culture, landscape and cuisine separately.

Culture and History

The Santuario de la Virgen de Gracia in La Fresneda is protected as a Bien de Interés Cultural (BIC) in the Monument category. The parish church of Santa María la Mayor combines rubble-stone and dressed-stone masonry and reflects its medieval origins as well as its present-day Baroque design. The parish church is reserved for special celebrations.

La Fresneda Town Hall was built towards the end of the 16th century; the year 1576 is inscribed on its façade. In 2002, La Fresneda Town Hall was granted Bien de Interés Cultural (BIC) status. La Fresneda Town Hall houses the old prison and an interpretation centre for the local heritage.

The Portal de Xifré, also locally known as the Arc de la Villa, forms part of La Fresneda’s old town walls. It served as the main entrance to the medieval town. Parts of the tower and walls of La Fresneda Castle have survived. The remains of La Fresneda Castle belong to a fortification of Arab origin.

La Fresneda’s Plaza Mayor has a triangular layout—an unusual design for this type of public square. Today, only the Plateresque church portal and part of the ancillary buildings of the Friars Minor monastery remain. La Cruz del Codolar is a Gothic wayside cross marking the traditional route to La Portellada and Fuentespalda.

Events and Local Life

The Antiques, Arts and Crafts Fair of La Fresneda takes place every year on Easter Saturday and Easter Sunday in the historic town centre.

Hortereta d’hort is La Fresneda’s typical dish, a stew made with potatoes, rice, vegetables, ham or bacon, snails and—when in season—courgette flowers.
