Discover Obón: Rock Art and Hiking Routes along the Río Martín

Obón lies where the valley of the Río Martín meets the Río Cabra. The Parque Cultural del Río Martín runs through the town along the Río Martín corridor.

Culture

At the El Cerrao rock shelter, there are 27 figures in a continuous frieze measuring 1.70 metres long and 0.60 metres high; they are painted wine red. The paintings at El Cerrao include hunting and battle scenes with line-drawn archers. The El Cerrao rock shelter is included in Aragón's register of caves and rock shelters with rock art; these caves and rock shelters are classified as Bienes de Interés Cultural.

The Ruta de las Chornas y el Cerrao is a route in Obón connected with the painted rock shelters of the Hocino de Chornas and El Cerrao. The Cueva del Chopo is one of the notable rock art complexes associated with Obón in the Parque Cultural del Río Martín. The Hocino de Chornas is one of three complexes of Levantine rock art near Obón that can be visited there.

Hiking

From Obón, the GR 262 initially follows a path towards the swimming pools and the hostel, then climbs to the nearby Mirador de Obón. The GR 262 runs opposite the La Coquinera rock paintings and a small picnic area.

The Ruta de los Cañones del río Martín runs between Obón and Alcaine and is connected with the La Coquinera rock shelters in Obón and La Cañada de Marco in Alcaine. The Obón–Alcaine section of the GR 262 is 8 kilometres long; the stated duration is 2 hours and 50 minutes. Nature

The Cueva de los Huesos is a Middle Pleistocene site containing a large accumulation of cemented remains of large vertebrates. It formed in limestone from former Jurassic seabeds, which also contain marine fossils such as ammonites.
