La Cuba between esparto craftsmanship and trails in the Valle del Oro

Culture and craftsmanship

The Iglesia de San Miguel Arcángel is a Baroque building made of masonry and dressed stone. The Iglesia Parroquial de San Miguel Arcángel has a rectangular floor plan with three naves of equal height and an aligned transept. Its stone tower consists of three sections; the upper section has an octagonal floor plan.

The Ermita de San Cristóbal is a simple chapel made predominantly of masonry with a wooden roof; its interior was recently restored. The Pellerich is a large orthogonal stone block that was used for administering justice in the past. The esparto craftsmanship tradition was historically of great importance in La Cuba; esparto grass was used to make work tools and everyday objects. Trails and landscape

The PR-TE 90 crosses the Barranco de Gazulla, climbs to the 1,176-metre-high Alto del Oro and passes through holm oak woodland on the return route. Stage 03 of the GR 8.2 from La Cuba to Mirambel starts at the Iglesia de San Miguel, is 5 km long and takes approximately 1 hour and 50 minutes. Canto del Oro is a viewpoint at an altitude of 1,179 metres listed among La Cuba’s tourist routes.

Experiences and tradition

Outside the village is La Balsa Eterna, a washhouse dating from 1965 that is connected by a path to the washhouse by the spring and the picnic area. La Cuba’s picnic area has two covered barbecue facilities, as well as several tables and chairs.

The Fiestas de San Cristóbal take place on the second weekend in August and include a mass at the Ermita de San Cristóbal. The upper floor of the Centro de Interpretación del Esparto displays tools and finished products; there is also an audiovisual programme in which residents of La Cuba explain this work. On the ground floor of the Centro de Interpretación del Esparto, a sound-and-light presentation guides visitors through the rooms; a voice tells the story of esparto grass.
