Alcaine: Rivers, Rock Paintings and Culture

Alcaine lies on the left bank of the Río Martín and the right bank of the Río Radón. Below the town, the two rivers meet and flow into the Cueva Foradada Reservoir.

Nature

Alcaine is part of the Parque Cultural del Río Martín, which combines the natural landscape of the Martín gorges with valuable rock paintings in the rock overhangs.

The Cascada del Cubo is a waterfall on the Río Radón; a path through pine forests and rock formations leads to it. It is free of charge and freely accessible year-round; there is no tourist infrastructure there.

Stage 05 of the GR-262 from Obón to Alcaine offers a turnoff below Las Cinglas to the rock paintings of la Cañada de Marco and then continues to Alcaine via the Cuesta de San Ramón.

Stage 06 of the GR-262 leads downstream from Alcaine, past the end of the Cueva Foradada Reservoir and onward to the former dyeing vats, the remains of a textile activity that has now been abandoned.

Culture

The Castillo de Alcaine stood on a ridge, had a rectangular layout and at least three defensive towers along its perimeter; only a few remains have survived. It was built in 1263 after the Christian conquest of this area and served to monitor the route running along the Río Martín between Híjar and Montalbán. The Castillo de Alcaine is classified as a Bien de Interés Cultural in the Monument category.

The Route de las Torres runs along the ridges and rocky cliffs southwest and north of Alcaine; five towers still survive there, some of which were converted into dovecotes.

The Iglesia de Santa María La Mayor in Alcaine dates from the 17th and 18th centuries and has a bell tower in the Mudéjar tradition. Its main chapel has an elliptical dome and a lantern decorated in the 18th century.

The Nevera de Alcaine is one of the traditional icehouses and ice pits protected in Aragón as a Bien de Interés Cultural in the Monument category.

The rock art sites of La Higuera and la Cañada de Marco are located within the municipality of Alcaine. They preserve prehistoric paintings depicting hunting scenes as well as human and animal figures from several thousand years ago.

The Centro de Interpretación de la Fauna del Parque Cultural del Río Martín is located in an old Renaissance mansion on Plaza Tenor Albero in Alcaine. Using reproductions, graphics and information panels, it provides knowledge about the park's ecosystems and the species living there. Admission is free; there is no fixed opening schedule, and prior contact is recommended before visiting.
