Mas de las Matas: Culture, Waterways and Nature

Mas de las Matas can be explored via a 23.1-kilometre circular route, historic religious buildings and water-related sites. The PR-TE 50 Mas de las Matas–Las Parras de Castellote begins and ends in Mas de las Matas and takes approximately 7 hours and 10 minutes.

Nature and trails

Along its route, the trail crosses the Guadalope at the Puente de la Palanca. It also follows an irrigation channel and runs above the weir on the Guadalope.

The landscapes around Mas de las Matas, shaped by the Guadalope and Bergantes rivers, are suitable for hiking, cycling and horse riding. The Ruta del Agua starts at the Oficina de Turismo. It leads to the numerous washing places that originated from the irrigation channels and explains their history through QR codes.

In the vicinity of Mas de las Matas, 6 kilometres away, lies the Bosque pétreo, an accessible site with fossilised tree trunks.

Culture in the town

The Iglesia de San Juan Bautista is protected as a Bien de Interés Cultural in the Monument category. The Capilla de la Virgen del Pilar preserves its original image and dates from the mid-18th century.

The Casa de la Villa is a Renaissance town hall with an arcaded loggia occupying a large part of the ground floor.

Today, twelve chapels remain in Mas de las Matas. They are dedicated to San Juan Bautista, Virgen del Rosario, San Antonio abad, San Miguel, San Pascual Bailón, San Roque, San José, Virgen del Carmen, Santa Flora, Piedad, Virgen del Pilar and Virgen de los Dolores.

Museums and knowledge of water

The Museo de Mas de las Matas comprises three exhibition areas: the Museo de historia local, the Molino harinero and the Alfarda.

The Alfarda is a restored warehouse from the early 20th century that serves as the Oficina de Turismo and as an interpretation centre for water and industrial archaeology.

The museum is accessed through the Oficina de Turismo in the same area of the Alfarda, C/ La Costera 2. In winter, visits are organised by prior appointment when the Oficina is closed.

The Almazara de Jaganta belongs to the museum network of the Parque Cultural del Maestrazgo and is assigned to Mas de las Matas.

Festivals and traditional forms

La Mochiganga is a humorous speech in verse consisting of approximately 120 lines, delivered in the church square after Mass.

The patron saint's festivities at the end of August include a procession accompanied by the La Pasma giants' troupe.

La Carroza is a traditional procession during the patron saint's festivities of Mas de las Matas. The procession passes through Plana Sancho and Mayor streets and across the church square.
