Cascante del Río: Culture, Landscape and Trails

The Castillo de Cascante del Río is classified as a cultural asset of special interest (Bien de Interés Cultural). This special status marks the beginning of a discovery shaped in Cascante del Río by chapels, festive traditions, river landscapes and trails with different focuses.

Culture and History

The Ermita de Santa Quiteria is located in the cemetery of Cascante del Río. It was built in the second half of the 20th century to replace the former chapel, which had been demolished to make room for the cemetery’s expansion.

Another historical trace leads to the Ermita de Escalante. It probably served as the parish church of a settlement that has since disappeared. A few kilometres from the town of Cascante del Río stands this single-nave building with a semicircular apse.

The Ermita de Santa Bárbara is also one of the town’s traditional religious landmarks. On 3 May, the Feast of the Holy Cross, a blessing of the fields was traditionally carried out from there.

Traditions

The historic celebration of Santa Quiteria included the distribution of Pan de Santa Quiteria, accompanied by roasted hemp seeds and wine. As part of this tradition, the couples most recently married in Cascante belonged to a group called the “clavarios de Santa Quiteria”, which was renewed each year. This group organised several rituals on the feast day of the saint, the patron saint of Cascante del Río.

Nature

The Camarena River, nearby springs and ravines shape Cascante del Río’s relationship with its landscape. Around Cascante del Río, the Barranco de Piqueras can be explored.

One route also places the surrounding area at the centre of attention: The Riodeva–Cascante del Río route ends in Cascante del Río at a viewpoint offering panoramic views of the surrounding area. Its direction, views and connection with the landscape give this route a different character from the town’s cultural sites.

The municipal picnic area La Balsa del Cho is regularly used by families, groups and local residents in spring and summer. Its seasonal use and the various landscape locations can be considered separately when planning your day.

Trails and Activities

The Cascante–Cubla route begins in Cascante del Río and heads towards Cubla. It is described as moderately difficult and has an elevation gain of 165 metres. In comparison with the Riodeva–Cascante del Río route, direction and elevation gain are therefore the focus here, while the other route is described through its viewpoint and panoramic views.
