Martín Del Río: Holiday apartment between gorge and culture

Martín Del Río combines a river gorge to the west with a distinctive river landscape and several traces of architecture and history. The Hocino de la Rambla was formed by the Río de la Rambla. At the same time, the village lies on the banks of the Río Martín and is surrounded by mountains. Landscape, paths, religious buildings and historical remains thus come together within a compact local setting.

Nature

Access to the Hocino de la Rambla begins via an unpaved track behind the town exit sign in the direction of Vivel del Río. By car, you can reach the starting point of the PR-TE 96 hiking trail. There you will find an information board and a car park. The drive and the subsequent path are therefore recognizable as separate sections.

The route to the Hocino de la Rambla is a round trip of approximately 8 km with no significant incline and is considered suitable for families. The approximate route length, the course without a significant incline and the unpaved track are details that can be considered alongside one another when planning your own day.

The landscape can be understood both through the gorge and through the surrounding mountains and the two river connections. The Río de la Rambla explains the formation of the Hocino de la Rambla, while the Río Martín defines the location of Martín Del Río.

On the way

The first stage of the GR 262 connects El Chorredero, Las Parras de Martín and Martín del Río. Thus, alongside the route to the Hocino de la Rambla, another connection between named places is a central feature. The different types of paths and local references can be assessed separately when planning.

The GR 262 is catalogued as a Sendero Turístico de Aragón. Its operator has committed to regular maintenance and to promoting the route. This classification supplements the specific stage description with the name and status of the overarching hiking trail.

Culture and history

The Iglesia de la Asunción de Nuestra Señora was built in the first half of the 18th century in the Baroque style, with a basilica floor plan. The building is therefore one of the locality's cultural monuments that can be clearly defined in terms of period and architecture.

Another distinctive building is the tower of the Ermita de los Santos Fabián y San Sebastián. It consists of three octagonal brick sections and is crowned by a copper cap. The tower is considered one of the finest examples of late Mudéjar architecture in the province of Teruel. Its form, materials and crowning copper cap give the building a distinctive architectural character.

The history of the surrounding area is also visible in several places. The medieval necropolis of El Pajazo was excavated in 2017. Trenches and defensive installations from the Spanish Civil War are also still visible in the area around Martín del Río. Medieval archaeology and remnants from the 20th century thus stand side by side as distinct historical traces.

Festivals

The San Fabián and San Sebastián festival is usually celebrated on the Saturday closest to 20 January. A large fire is lit in the afternoon. The date links the name of the local hermitage with a recurring custom in the annual cycle.
