Discover La Portellada: Waterfalls, Culture and Holiday Apartments

From La Portellada, the Salt de La Portellada can be reached via a signposted turnoff onto a forest track. A path of around 15 minutes then leads to the waterfalls; the round trip is approximately 4 kilometres long and takes about an hour.

Nature and Trails

The PR-TE 161 hiking trail begins on the outskirts of La Portellada, near several farmhouses located outside the village opposite the road to Fórnoles. Another destination lies on the TE-22 towards La Fresneda: access to the Olivera del Pla is about 800 metres from the village. Its hollow trunk forms a small cave with numerous grooves and hollows; at the site, you can also see elaborately constructed terraces with dry-stone walls.

About 500 metres from La Portellada, a PR hiking trail sign points to a short detour to the Cueva de San Antonio. The Cueva de San Antonio is a hermitage largely carved out of the natural rock. It lies at the foot of a slope densely covered with pine trees and has a semicircular entrance made of hewn stone. A coat of arms with three bars is located on the keystone.

The Piló de Sant Pere Màrtir de Verona stands on the route between Fuentespalda and La Portellada, on a hill offering impressive views of the banks of the Tastavins River.

Culture and History

The parish church of San Cosme and San Damián was built in the 17th century, when La Portellada was still a district of La Fresneda. The building is made of rubble stone and ashlar and has three naves, each with three bays, a transept and a dome over pendentives. Paintings of Our Lady and the Apostles from 1758 have been preserved on the inside of the dome.

The Casa Consistorial de La Portellada corresponds to the architectural type of Aragonese town halls from the 16th and early 17th centuries. It was built as the house of the Brotherhood of San Cosme and San Damián and became the town hall in 1784, after the village gained independence from La Fresneda.

Festivals and Local Traditions

At the Salt de La Portellada, it is part of the local Easter tradition to eat rosca on Easter Monday and on the Monday of the second week of Easter, 40 days later. The pastry is made with a hard-boiled egg, sardine or sausage.

The Ermita de San Miguel dates back to the early 18th century. There are two viewpoints and a leisure area for children at the hermitage. Every year on 28 September, following the Fiestas Mayores of La Portellada, a pilgrimage to the Ermita de San Miguel takes place; after Mass, traditional “pa amb oli” is shared.

The La Portellada Horticulture and Vegetable-Growing Fair brings together gardening enthusiasts, farmers and nurseries.
