Gúdar – Mountain Landscape, Churches and Trails

Gúdar has a typical mountain landscape with extensive pine forests, grazing areas and numerous springs. From its elevated location, Gúdar offers views of the valley of the Río Alfambra. The GR 199 – Senda Fluvial del Alfambra runs from its source in the Valle de Motorritas in Gúdar to the Ríos Bajos near Galve.

Culture and History

The Iglesia de Santa Bárbara is a three-aisled church with a higher central nave and vaulted side aisles. Paintings dated to 1882 have been preserved inside. The tower has a square floor plan, an octagonal upper section and a stone spire built on an octagonal base.

From the centre of Gúdar, the Ermita de Santa María Magdalena can be reached via the ascending Calle de la Magdalena. The chapel has medieval origins. It was once the parish church of Gúdar and is associated with the town’s first settlement site on the Peña de la Magdalena.

Hiking and Trails

Stage 02 of the GR 199 leads downhill from the Valle de Motorritas along the Río Alfambra and passes the Fuente del Cura and the Vega de Gúdar. The section from Gúdar to Allepuz is 6.9 kilometres long and has a stated duration of 1 hour and 55 minutes. This stage is catalogued as a Sendero Turístico de Aragón.

The Ruta de las Mariposas de Gúdar comprises six panels on the biology, ecology and protection of butterflies, as well as trail markers and directional arrows. It begins at the Ermita de Santa Quiteria in the Valle de Motorritas and ends at the Fuente del Cura in the Vega de Gúdar.

Nature and Landscape

In the Barranco de las Umbrías along the PRTE-33, there are clear, tranquil pools. The Cerro de los Siete Lugares is a natural viewpoint overlooking the grain fields of the neighbouring villages and the surrounding Sierra. The Pino Lentejas is designated as a monumental tree.

The river section and its riverbank on the Gúdar–Río Blanco–Gúdar route belong to the Reserva Natural Fluvial del río Alfambra. The Fuente de los Caños is described as a worthwhile destination for excursionists. La Dehesa is a picnic area among pine trees.

Further Activities and Destinations

A 16.5-kilometre mountain-bike route leads from Gúdar to the Ermita de Santa Quiteria in the Valle de Motorritas. Along its route through the Valle de Motorritas are masías and corrales with attractive dry-stone structures.

The range of topics thus extends from sacred architectural history and river and mountain landscapes to nature-focused marked trails and a mountain-bike route. Those who combine different interests can consider these focuses separately rather than assigning Gúdar to just one type of trip.
