Discover Mirambel: Historic Walls and Trails

Mirambel showcases a historic ensemble whose restoration received the Europa Nostra Award in 1982. As early as 1980, Mirambel’s historic ensemble was declared a historic and artistic heritage site. The townscape can be read through its gates, walls, towers and individual monuments. Mirambel can be discovered from several perspectives: through its fortifications, religious buildings, historical periods and paths through the landscape.

Culture

The Portal de las Monjas is Mirambel’s main gate to the historic town centre. Its middle floor contains a chapel dedicated to Saint Thomas. Traces of the Knights Templar have been preserved in Mirambel’s streets. On the inside of the Muralla de Mirambel, grilles made of plaster and wood enclose the galleries built onto the line of the wall.

The Torreón de las Monjas was built between the 15th and 16th centuries and is regarded as Mirambel’s most important monument. The walled complex has preserved five historic gates and four towers. The Muralla de Mirambel is among the fortresses classified as Bienes de Interés Cultural. Mirambel’s Castillo-Palacio reflects both a Templar and a Hospitaller period.

The parish church of Santa Margarita was rebuilt a few years after being burned during the First Carlist War in 1836. Outside the walls stands the Ermita de San Roque, a rectangular masonry building with an open forecourt featuring three large round arches. Outside the town centre there is also the Mas Fortificado, a group of buildings from the 14th and 15th centuries in a rural setting.

Landscape

Mirambel lies on a plateau by the Cantavieja River. The plateau and river complement the architectural perspective with a geographical context.

Trails and Cuisine

Stage 03 of the GR 8.2 reaches Mirambel opposite the Portal de las Monjas. It is a 5 km crossing from the Iglesia de San Miguel, with an approximate duration of 1 hour and 50 minutes. The PR–TE 86 trail reaches a medieval bridge and the former Ronda mill. The trail information and the buildings in the town centre stand alongside one another as distinct focal points for exploration.
