Culture
The Iglesia de la Concepción in Alloza is a church with three naves, four bays and a rectangular chancel. The present building was constructed between 1550 and 1600. The Centro de Interpretación El Castelillo offers another way of exploring the town’s history: in several display cases, it presents an interesting collection of reproductions of finds from the nearby El Castelillo archaeological site. The centre is located on the road that passes through Alloza towards Oliete. At the same time, it provides a comprehensive insight into Iberian culture and the Iberian period, with a particular focus on artistic creations.
The Nevera de Alloza is a 17th-century snow well. It is approximately nine metres deep and about eight metres wide at the base of the dome. In Bajo Aragón, it is considered one of the finest examples of this type of structure.
History and Traditions
The Calvario de Alloza is considered one of the oldest Calvaries in Aragon. The Santo Sepulcro hermitage, or church, on the Calvario dates from the early 18th century. The Santo Sepulcro chapel has tiled decoration dating from 1788 on its floor and lower wall section. The path to the hermitage is lined with more than 200 cypress trees; some are estimated to be over 500 years old.
The annual calendar includes a festival in honour of Saint Blaise on 3 February. Another tradition in Alloza is the pilgrimage to the Calvario hermitage on Whit Sunday, which includes a communal bean dish. The celebrations for the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, held on 13 and 14 September, include a colourful parade with floats.
Nature
The Parque Escultórico Los Barrancos is a cultural space fully integrated into nature, featuring works by recognised sculptors. From Alloza, a circular route marked as an Aragonese tourist hiking trail leads for 15 kilometres to the Embalse del Escuriza and back. The area around the Embalse del Escuriza is considered particularly suitable for observing waterfowl.
Aleppo pine forest (Pinus halepensis) dominates the Pinar del Cabezo Galindo and Las Cinglas de Alloza. The undergrowth includes holm oaks, junipers, hawthorns, thyme and rosemary; various bird species are regularly found in the area. A route through the Pinar del Cabezo Galindo and Las Cinglas leads to the Mirador de Las Cinglas and then returns to Alloza via a paved track.
Trails and Mining
The Ruta de la Minería connects Ariño, Alloza and Andorra in the area known as Val de Ariño. Guided tours of the “Restauración ecológica de zonas mineras” interpretation area are organised from the mining park. This is located in Val de Ariño between the municipalities of Andorra and Alloza and includes Corta Alloza and Corta Barrabasa.
