Mora de Rubielos is protected as a Bien de Interés Cultural in the category of Historic Ensemble. Its urban layout developed from its foundation in the 12th century through to the 17th century.

Culture and History

The surviving parts of Mora de Rubielos’s fortifications include the two towers in the south, the de Cabra and Alcalá gates, and the Antiguo and Nuevo Portal de Rubielos.

Guided tours departing from the Mora de Rubielos Tourist Office explore the history of the town, the old town, the former collegiate church of Santa María la Mayor and the Castillo de Mora de Rubielos.

The Iglesia de la Natividad de Nuestra Señora is protected as a Bien de Interés Cultural in the category of Monument. Also known as the Iglesia de la Natividad de Nuestra Señora (ex Colegiata), it is a mid-15th-century church built of ashlar stone in the Levantine Gothic style.

Mora de Rubielos brings together a particularly important collection of historic manor houses belonging to wealthy hidalgos, including the Cortel de la Fuen del Olmo manor house, dating from the 15th century and remodelled in 1751.

Nature and Trails

In the immediate surroundings, the short Senda Fluvial Las Tosquillas is an easy trail that runs all the way around the reservoir. Numerous hiking trails lead from Mora de Rubielos through part of the Sierra de Gúdar.

The immediate surroundings also include a ravine where visitors can see the La Hiedra waterfall and the Mas de Abajo bridge.

Festivals and Cuisine

The Puerta al Mediterráneo Festival was established in 1987 at the Castillo de Mora de Rubielos as a cultural tourism project for remote areas such as the Sierra de Gúdar-Javalambre.

The traditional festival of San Miguel is celebrated on the weekend closest to 8 May, with a large bonfire in the Plaza de la Villa and a procession to the Ermita de San Miguel.

The traditional cuisine of Mora de Rubielos is closely linked to local products such as cereals, pulses, vegetables, certain types of fruit, pork, lamb and rabbit, poultry and game. Jamón de Teruel, which has the Denominación de Origen Jamón de Teruel designation of origin status, is one of Mora de Rubielos’s best-known products.
