San Blas on the Guadalaviar – Nature, Trails and History

At the outskirts of San Blas, the Camino Natural del Guadalaviar begins in an open area with an information board and the first footbridges beside the remains of an old mill. The trail runs between the San Blas district of Teruel and the Embalse del Arquillo through the canyon of the Guadalaviar River.

Trails
In the canyon of the Guadalaviar River, the Camino Natural crosses up to eight consecutive wooden bridges. The remains of a small, abandoned medieval dam are preserved in the rocky canyon. The upper variant of the Camino Natural climbs approximately 100 metres along a zigzag trail and offers views of slopes covered with juniper trees and cereal plains.
Nature
The canyon is home to, among other species, golden eagles, Egyptian vultures and griffon vultures. The dam of the Embalse del Arquillo de San Blas continuously releases water to ensure the flow required to preserve river biodiversity.
The Camino Natural ends with a view of the Sabinar de San Blas, which is designated as a Site of Community Importance (SCI). The San Blas fishing area on the Guadalaviar River extends for 12 kilometres from the dam of the Embalse del Arquillo to the confluence of the Guadalaviar and Alfambra.
Trails and Cycling
The riverside promenade along the Guadalaviar River was renovated in 2025 between the Fuente de la Señorita in the San Blas district and the Embalse del Arquillo; the Ayuntamiento de Teruel completed the work in November 2025. The aim was to improve conditions for use, increase safety and improve maintenance.
A signposted mountain-biking route from El Campillo to Villaspesa runs via Teruel to the San Blas district, then continues through the floodplain of the Guadalaviar River and leads on to Teruel. Route descriptions, GPX files and four information boards are available for the municipal mountain-biking programme with the El Campillo–Villaspesa route.
Culture
A quartzite hand axe from the terraces above the Guadalaviar River near San Blas is assigned to the Early Acheulean of the Lower Palaeolithic and dated to approximately 300,000 years ago. The hand axes of San Blas are considered the first documented human settlement in what is now the Province of Teruel and are traditionally assigned to the Lower Palaeolithic.
The Roman milestones of San Blas are examples of elements used to mark ancient roads.
