Camañas: Castle, Romanesque Art and a Cycling Route

Culture and History

The Ermita de la Virgen del Consuelo is one of the few surviving Romanesque buildings in the province of Teruel. It was built as a chapel for the nearby castle. Its Romanesque murals depict the Pantocrator and the Tetramorph.

The remains of the Castillo de Camañas stand behind the parish church and, together with the Ermita de la Virgen del Consuelo, form a historic ensemble. The Iglesia de la Asunción de Nuestra Señora is a late-16th-century building with Gothic architecture and decorative Renaissance motifs.

Routes and Terrain

The Morrón de la Tejería was a former provisional retreat position for troops. It is accessible via the TE-V-1009 road; about five kilometres from the edge of Camañas, a signposted path leads to a car park, from which a short stretch leads to the trench sections.

On the Cerro de la Mina, six trench sections have been prepared to make it easier to explore the terrain on foot.

Landscape and Cycling Route

Camañas opens out towards the Sierra Palomera; the surrounding area has paths, holm oak groves and ravines.

The Celadas–Camañas–Visiedo cycling route passes over the Cerro de la Mina, by a former magnesite mine and by nearby trenches from the Spanish Civil War.
