Discover Concud: Hemp History and Paleontology

Concud combines tangible craft history with unusual traces of Earth’s history. The cultivation and processing of hemp were important activities and economic resources here. Three ovens for drying hemp, a shelter known as „agrama“ and a basin have been preserved; they were used in hemp processing. In 2007, these three hemp-drying ovens, the shelter and the basin were designated as listed cultural heritage of Aragón.

Culture and Craft

The hemp facilities make a historical working context legible through several preserved structures. The ovens represent drying, while the shelter and basin document further stages of processing. It is precisely this combination of activity, economic resource and tangible architectural evidence that gives the site a clearly defined cultural-historical theme.

Traces of Earth’s History

A second layer can be found in the Barranco de las Calaveras in Concud. A rich mammalian fauna from the Turolian was discovered there. The Turolian is an internationally recognised geological time unit with an Aragonese designation. The site therefore points to a specific geological classification, rather than merely to general observations of nature.

Paleontological murals depicting animals that lived in this area seven million years ago are distributed throughout the town itself. Residents of Concud created the murals and installed them at various locations in the town. They show reconstructions of a dog, a wild boar and a deer that were found in Concud. The site of discovery, time period and depiction remain recognisable as distinct elements of local paleontology.

History and Festivals

The built heritage includes the Church of San Martín de Tous and the Chapel of Santa Bárbara. The church was rebuilt in 1743, while the chapel is located on Cerro de Santa Bárbara. These two details mark different historical points of reference within Concud.

A date-specific occasion is added by the patron-saint festivals. They take place in the second half of August in honour of the patron saints San Martín and Santa Bárbara. This makes it possible to consider the permanently visible religious buildings and the annually recurring festival period separately when planning a trip.

Routes and Geographical Context

The route theme is also specifically identified in Concud: the La Conquista de Valencia route is designated near Concud as a BTT-MTB route option. The Vía Verde Ojos Negros runs separately in the vicinity of Concud. The two details therefore differ in their spatial relationship and in the type of route designated.

Concud thus offers several clearly distinguishable points of interest: preserved evidence of hemp processing, paleontological finds and murals, historic religious buildings, a festival period and named routes. By comparing these themes, visitors can set the focus of their own exploration between local history, Earth’s history, cultural events and route options.
