Cedrillas: Source of the Mijares and Medieval Heritage

The SL-TE 10 Sendero del Nacimiento del Río Mijares begins in Cedrillas and heads towards the source of the Mijares through the Ferial district and a dense pine forest to the source area of the Río Mijares. Culture

The Museo de Cedrillas is dedicated to the municipality's natural, cultural and landscape heritage. Its six thematic areas cover the natural environment, traditions and the festival calendar, gastronomy, history and cultural heritage, cultural landscapes, and the audiovisual presentation “Cedrillas a vista de pájaro”. The gastronomy section presents food products from Cedrillas, particularly ham and cured sausages.

The remains of the Castillo de Cedrillas are located in the upper part of the town. The presumably extensive rectangular fortress measured approximately 45 × 20 metres; today, only two long masonry walls remain. The structure of a medieval Christian settlement, as well as a market square, a church square and the main streets, can also be identified within the Castillo.

The 17th-century Ermita de Loreto is a square chapel with a ribbed vault, a large porch and a rear garden overlooking the town and its Castillo. The Ermita de El Salvador was built in the second half of the 16th century. The viewpoint “Juegos del Ayer: Infancia Medieval en Cedrillas” features a sculpture of two young residents of the Castillo de Cedrillas playing typical games of their time.

The Feria de Cedrillas is an annual event that has been held for a century and takes place on the weekend of the first Sunday in October. It includes livestock exhibitions, agricultural machinery, a traditional market, gastronomy and cultural activities; there are also demonstrations of horse training, ploughing, falconry and sheepdog handling, an agricultural machinery exhibition, food stalls and a street market.

The Fiesta de Santa Quiteria includes a pilgrimage of approximately three kilometres from Cedrillas to the Ermita de Santa Quiteria on 22 May, followed by a mass with its own hymns and offerings to the Virgin. The Merendero municipal Santa Quiteria is usually used by families, groups and local residents in May and during the summer.
