Valdealgorfa combines a church officially declared a Bien de Interés Cultural with historic sites, regional landscapes and unusual trail experiences. The Iglesia de la Natividad de Nuestra Señora has a tower with three octagonal brick levels, classical motifs and elements of the Mudéjar tradition. The Iglesia Parroquial de la Natividad de Nuestra Señora was built in the Baroque style; construction began in 1702, and the tower was completed in 1743.

The historic buildings also include the Nevera de Valdealgorfa, an underground ice house dating from the late 17th century. Its fully preserved vaulted chamber is 8.4 metres wide. The restored Nevera is considered accessible and open to visitors. The Ermita de Santa Bárbara is a rectangular single-nave building with a dressed-stone portal supported by three semicircular arches; construction was approved in 1686 and completed in 1689.

In the church of the Convento de Santa Clara, 18th-century frescoes depict the Stigmatisation of Saint Francis, the expulsion of the Moors by Saint Clare and the apparition of Christ before Saint Margaret. The Capilla del Buen Suceso was rebuilt at the end of the 19th century after its original building burned down in 1840; the original 18th-century building had been completed in 1768. The Portal de Alcañiz and Portal de San Roque have also been preserved; a chapel dedicated to the saint was built above the latter in the 17th century. The Pozo de la Cadena is a historic water facility with a stone well rim and a spring reached via a broad descent.

Landscapes and Trails

The landscape around Valdealgorfa includes olive and almond groves, grain fields, Mediterranean scrubland and Aleppo pines. A 7.5-kilometre trail leads through agricultural and forest landscapes to the Ermita de Santa Bárbara. Another trail runs through pine forests as well as almond and olive fields in a similarly agricultural and forested setting. The Meridiano 0 route follows the old road to Valjunquera and passes traditional dry-stone walls, almond and olive fields, and Mediterranean vegetation.

The Túnel del Equinoccio is more than two kilometres long. During the spring and autumn equinoxes, if weather conditions are suitable, sunlight can pass through the tunnel from one end to the other. Because there is no lighting and some sections have collapsed, crossing the tunnel is discouraged; instead, the signposted alternative route around the tunnel must be used. This route is approximately six kilometres long and runs between olive and almond terraces, through small hollows and past artificial livestock watering points.

The Val de Zafán Natural Way Greenway section begins at Valdealgorfa railway station. A designated picnic area makes the station the starting point of the route. Another route follows a section of the Vía Verde Val de Zafán to the former Valdealgorfa railway station. The different route lengths and landscapes can be compared directly for your own planning.

Traditions and Regional Insights

In Valdealgorfa, the tradition of the San Antón bonfire has been maintained since the late 19th century. On the Monday after the communions, a pilgrimage takes place on the occasion of Pascua Granada to the Ermita de Santa Bárbara, which stands on a hill. The hermitage stands on a high hill and offers a panoramic view. Nuestra Señora de la Natividad and San Fortunato are the patron saints of Valdealgorfa; the 8th and 9th are designated as feast days in their honour.

Valdealgorfa’s baked goods also enjoy a good reputation; two wood-fired ovens operate there using traditional artisanal methods. The Centro Expositivo Pardo Sastrón includes a botanical garden with around 38 plant species from the region catalogued by Pardo Sastrón. The Espacio de Indumentaria exhibition area presents the history of traditional clothing in the historic Bajo Aragón from the 18th century to the beginning of the 20th century.
