Discover Cella: Fuente de Cella, cultural heritage and trails
Cella is home to the Fuente de Cella, an artesian spring constructed in the 12th century. Between 1729 and 1731, it was designed by Domingo Ferrari, captain of the Corps of Engineers, on behalf of the Audiencia of Aragón.
Culture
The structure is elliptical. Its larger diameter measures 34.83 metres and its smaller diameter 24.84 metres. Its circumference is 130 metres; the depth is 9 metres at the edge and 11.5 metres in the centre. The average flow is approximately 3,500 litres per second. The water emerges on one side through a covered passage dedicated to the Ermita de San Clemente.
The original Iglesia parroquial de Nuestra Señora de la Inmaculada was built by the Templars in the last third of the 12th century. The ashlar-built tower at the foot of the church on the Epistle side dates from 1609.
The Castillo de Cella, a Muslim and Christian fortress mentioned in the Cantar de Mio Cid, is included in the list of castles in Aragón classified as Bienes de Interés Cultural. Only a section of wall made of irregular stones and the remains of a rectangular tower on the hillside beside the parish church of the Inmaculada remain of the fortress. Archaeological excavations in the centre of Cella also confirmed the existence of a significant late Republican Roman settlement.
