Formiche Alto: Trails, Via Ferrata and Historic Buildings

The local “Formiche Alto-Sabina Pinera” hiking trail begins at the fourth kilometre of the road between Formiche Alto and El Castellar and leads to the La Serretilla scenic viewpoint. For planning purposes, you can consider the route, time, landscape and culture as separate topics.

Nature

After about 15 minutes, the same hiking trail reaches the Mijares River and follows it upstream to the narrow sections. The Via Ferrata de los Estrechos de la Hoz runs along the Mijares River and leads into the Estrechos de la Hoz. It is located just over three kilometres from Formiche Alto on the road towards El Castellar. The Sabina Pinera is a pine tree that grows inside a juniper tree and is more than 100 years old.

The botanical walk to the Lavadero Antiguo also follows the Fuente Nueva. Time and distance information is presented here alongside the course of the river and the form of the tree; those wishing to organise different nature topics can consider the different trail characteristics separately.

Culture

The Iglesia de la Asunción is a 17th-century building in the Gothic style, transitional to Baroque. The Puente del camino de Teruel was built in the first quarter of the 14th century. In the wider regional surroundings of Formiche Alto, the Museo Aragonés de Paleontología is a museum; the Museo Histórico, the Museo Provincial de Teruel and Acueducto de los Arcos are also museums there. Building history and museum topics can be considered as different cultural references when planning a visit to the area.

Regional context

Monte Castelfrío, Peñarroya and Javalambre are mountains in the wider regional surroundings of Formiche Alto. Fuente de la Zarza is a spring in the wider regional surroundings of Formiche Alto. The aforementioned mountains and spring are therefore situated at a broader regional level than the local trails and buildings.

Seasonal events

The XIX Jornadas Micológicas in Formiche Alto were an established event in the comarca’s autumn calendar. These Jornadas included a public tasting of mushroom dishes and stews in the square. The programme also included a free excursion into the surrounding area.

When searching for holiday accommodation in Formiche Alto, you can compare travel dates, apartment or room category and cancellation conditions on accommodation listing pages. Nature trails, buildings, museums and the autumn mushroom event are presented as different thematic points of reference. Nature, culture and the event date thus form three clearly distinguishable focal points. For travel dates, the autumn event must be categorised differently in terms of timing from trails, buildings and museums; the respective topics can therefore be incorporated separately into your personal planning. It is also possible to assign different importance according to landscape, history or the nature of the event.
