Albarracín: Rock Art, Pinares de Rodeno and Medieval Culture

The protected landscape of Pinares de Rodeno encompasses Albarracín. Sandstone and conglomerate formations, extensive stands of Scots pine and Levantine rock art characterize Pinares de Rodeno. Albarracín is home to a significant group of Levantine rock paintings. Albarracín was the first city in Aragon to be declared a historic-artistic site.

Nature and Trails

The network of trails in Pinares de Rodeno includes the PR-TE 117 from Albarracín to the Área Recreativa del Navazo recreation area. The Paseo Fluvial del Río Guadalaviar runs along stone paths, stairs, suspension bridges and boardwalks and is a circular route at the foot of Albarracín. Seven sections of the Roman aqueduct, with a total length of two kilometres, have been made accessible to the public.

Culture and History

Today’s cathedral of Albarracín was built in the 16th century on the foundations of an earlier church. The Roman aqueduct between Albarracín and Cella carried water from the Guadalaviar River.

A guided tour combines a walk through Albarracín with access to the cathedral and explains Albarracín’s medieval defensive system using the Alcazaba as an example. The Torreón del Andador is a preserved testimony to the historical period that also includes the Alcazaba and the Torre del Agua.

The Museo Diocesano displays religious art including paintings, sculptures, goldsmiths’ work, musical instruments and textiles from the 14th to the 18th century. The Museo Diocesano houses a collection of Flemish tapestries depicting the story of Gideon. The Museo Diocesano is located in the former state rooms of the Bishop’s Palace next to the cathedral.

The Abrigo del Prado del Navazo is located four kilometres from Albarracín on the road towards Bezas. The Abrigo del Prado del Navazo is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site “Rock Art of the Mediterranean Basin on the Iberian Peninsula”. It features large white animal figures, several isolated depictions of bulls and archers added at a later date; the rock art is dated to the Neolithic period between 7,000 and 5,000 BC.

Arrival and Access to the Town

From Teruel, take the N-234 towards Zaragoza and then the A-1512 to Albarracín. Vehicle access to the interior of Albarracín is restricted. When arriving in Albarracín, you should leave your car, motorcycle or motorhome in the large regulated car park at the entrance to the town.
