Discover Allepuz: Trails, Nature and Historic Buildings

Allepuz lies between the Sierra de Gúdar and the Maestrazgo in the eastern part of the Iberian System. The Camino de los Pilones, a medieval trading route almost six kilometres long, runs between Villarroya de los Pinares and Allepuz.

Nature and Landscape

The valley in the eastern part of the municipality of Allepuz is named after the Sollavientos River. There is a picnic area at the Fuente de los Berros spring. La Avellanera is a dense forest of wild hazel bushes on the slope of a rocky cliff face. In the Barranco Jaime, preserved fairy chimneys approximately two metres high can be seen.

Trails and Activities

The Camino de los Pilones is protected as a Bien de Interés Cultural in the category “Historic Site”. It consists of 113 stone pilons from the 17th century and extends over six kilometres; a path carved into the rock leads from the Palacio de Allepuz and Calle de la Luna to the historic site. The GR 199 is catalogued and inventoried by the Government of Aragon as a tourist hiking trail. In the municipality of Allepuz, the GR 199 leads to the course of the Sollavientos and then along a path shaded by pollard poplars to the bridge of the A-228 road. The Valle de Sollavientos MTB route begins in the town of Allepuz and follows a path that connects to the Camino de los Pilones.

Culture and History

The Iglesia de La Purificación is a Baroque church with three naves that was apparently built in 1771. At the entrance to Allepuz, the Ermita de Nuestra Señora del Loreto is a 17th-century building made of rubble stone and ashlar; its single-nave interior is covered by a dome dating from 1692. The Casa Grande was restored and converted into a Hospedería; on the upper floor there is a loggia with four round arches on cylindrical columns, while the interior also features a large vestibule with pebble paving and a Renaissance staircase.

Events

Allepuz’s patron saint festivities in honour of Santa María Magdalena take place on 22 July; whenever possible, the weekend before or after is chosen for this purpose. The programme includes bullfighting events and musical performances.
