Huévar del Aljarafe combines impressive religious architecture, vibrant local festival traditions and the protected landscape of the Corredor Verde del Guadiamar. Between a church with Gothic-Mudejar features, brotherhood processions, traditional dishes and varied landscapes, a multifaceted picture of the town emerges. Historical landmarks such as the Hacienda del Marqués de la Motilla and the preserved part of an Arab mill are also among the defining sites.

Culture

The Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la Asunción was completed in 1510 in a Gothic-Mudejar style. The building has three naves and three later chapels dating from the 16th and 17th centuries. Passages run beneath the entire church and converge in an underground crypt. This crypt probably served as a Christian refuge during the Muslim period.

The Hacienda del Marqués de la Motilla is also part of the historic architecture. It dates from the 18th century and is particularly distinguished by its brick portal. A section of an Arab mill has also been preserved in the hacienda, including a press for processing olives into oil.

The religious year is marked by several notable traditions. On Palm Sunday, more than one hundred children dressed as Hebrews accompany the Santísimo Cristo del Amor on his triumphal entry into Jerusalem. Holy Week in Huévar del Aljarafe begins on the Thursday before the Friday of Sorrows with the transfer of the titular images of the Brotherhood of the Sangre from the Iglesia Parroquial Ntra. Sra. de la Asunción to its brotherhood house. They remain there for the procession on Maundy Thursday. On Easter Sunday, the procession „Gloriosa Resurrección de Jesús“ takes place; in Huévar del Aljarafe, it was revived as an older local tradition.

Festivals and cuisine

On 20 January, Huévar del Aljarafe celebrates the feast day of its patron saint, San Sebastián, with the Fiesta de la Caldereta. The festival lasts around five days, and all the town's brotherhoods take part. During the fiesta, four brotherhoods compete in a caldereta competition. At each festival stall, visitors can sample the typical dish as well as various tapas and drinks free of charge.

Caldereta de Borrego is considered a typical dish of Huévar del Aljarafe. It is eaten mainly in winter and during the San Sebastián festival. Another local speciality is Torta de hornazo, a traditional sweet from Huévar del Aljarafe associated with Easter Sunday.

Landscape and trails

The Corredor Verde del Guadiamar is designated as a protected landscape and divided into four sections. The route passes through riparian, agricultural, marshland and dehesa landscapes and extends for around 67 kilometres along the middle and lower Guadiamar. The Corredor Verde del Guadiamar is recommended for cycling and horse riding; some sections can be explored on foot. This means that different forms of transport coexist within the same landscape area, from bicycles and horses to individual stretches covered on foot.
