Holiday apartment in Los Corrales – Flamenco, culture and nature
Los Corrales combines culture, local festivals and a rural setting with traces of its Roman past. This is complemented by the natural surroundings of the Fuente del Esparto and events that shape the town throughout the year. In Los Corrales, the Iglesia Parroquial de Santiago el Mayor stands as a listed monument at Plaza Diamantino García Acosta 18. The church was built in the 18th century. Its floor plan is in the shape of a Latin cross, with three naves, each divided into three sections.
Culture
Every August, Los Corrales hosts the Festival Flamenco de la Sierra Sur. For decades, it has brought together leading figures in singing, guitar playing and dancing with promising young talents. The Semana Cultural of Los Corrales complements the cultural calendar as an established summer programme featuring art exhibitions, music, theatre and performances. Religious traditions are also part of the town’s public life. The pilgrimage in honour of Our Lady of Good Success, the patron saint of Los Corrales, takes place in March near the stream of the Fuente del Esparto. During the traditional Romería, the route to the Fuente del Esparto is travelled by festival floats and carts. During the festivities in honour of the Virgen del Buensuceso on the first weekend of May, restaurants serve Chivo frito.
Nature
The Fuente del Esparto is a natural tourist setting, two kilometres from the municipality and surrounded by woodland. Its natural surroundings include hiking trails. The stream of the Fuente del Esparto is the main tributary crossing the municipal area of Los Corrales. As part of an improvement project, the access routes, trail drainage and barbecue and picnic areas at the Fuente del Esparto were upgraded. For further activities, the Ana Reverte riding school organises horse-riding routes around Los Corrales. The Sierra Sur can also be explored by bicycle from Los Corrales.
History
Remains of a Roman fortification were found at the Cortijo de Repla, next to a grotto from which a spring emerges. Numerous pottery fragments and several silver coins, known as denarii, were discovered in the vicinity of these Roman fortification remains. Archaeologists have suggested that the ruins at the Cortijo de Repla could correspond to Ilipa or Ilipula Minor.
