Holiday apartment in Gines – church art, ceramic route and Rocío tradition

Gines invites visitors to take a closer look at its clearly identifiable cultural heritage. The focal point is the Parroquia de Nuestra Señora de Belén, a late Mudéjar church dating from the 16th century. It was built over an older structure and remodelled during the Renaissance in the 17th century. Its architectural history thus brings together several historical periods in one place.

The high altar is designed in the Rococo style; at its centre is an anonymous image of Nuestra Señora de Belén dating from the late 16th or early 17th century. The same church also houses the painting “La Ascensión de Cristo”. The work by Sevillian painter Domingo Martínez is dated 1725 and is considered one of the perhaps most outstanding paintings there.

Another religious building is the Ermita de Santa Rosalía. It was built in 1723 and is considered one of the town’s most emblematic and historically significant buildings. Inside, the hermitage has a Baroque high altar, with Santa Rosalía as its central figure. Its floor plan is basilical.

The cultural traces in the public space include the Ruta de las Sevillanas de Gines. It features 17 Sevillanas from Gines, depicted on an equal number of hand-painted, artisan-made ceramic panels by ceramist María Ángeles Garrido Peña. The Ruta de las Sevillanas de Gines can be seen on Conde de Ofalia, Alcalde José Antonio Cabrera and Blas Infante streets. In addition, Plaza de España and Calle Real were converted into a pedestrian zone.

Events

Gines also hosts “Una Pará en Gines”, a tourist fair of great importance. It revolves around nature and the town’s strong Rocío tradition. The event lasts four days and includes numerous activities for all target groups. Alongside the architectural and ceramic heritage, a concentrated event format is therefore also a central feature.

The regional transport authority lists route M-160 as a connection between Gines and Seville.
