Holiday apartment in Seville – Cathedral, Alcázar and flamenco

In the heart of Seville, the Cathedral, the Alcázar and the Archivo de Indias form a remarkable monumental complex. The buildings, museums, routes and performances each offer different cultural focal points.

Culture

Seville Cathedral has five naves and is the largest Gothic building in Europe. The Giralda is a masterpiece of Almohad architecture. The Archivo de Indias houses valuable documents from the archives of the colonies in the Americas. At the same time, the building is one of the clearest examples of Spanish Renaissance architecture. In Seville, different periods and architectural forms of expression thus come together directly, without the individual examples being reduced to a single historical perspective.

History

The Alcázar also brings together several layers of history. The original core was built in the 10th century as the palace of the Muslim governor. To this day, the Alcázar is used as the residence of the Spanish royal family in Seville. The site's historical function is therefore not rooted solely in the period in which it was established, but extends into the present day.

Museums

The Museum of Arts and Popular Customs of Seville is located in the Parque de María Luisa, within the Plaza de América. The Plaza de América was designed by Aníbal González for the Ibero-American Exposition of 1929. The museum has one of the most complete collections of Andalusian folk ceramics in Europe. Also in Seville, the Archaeological Museum traces history from the Palaeolithic to the Roman period and displays, among other things, important pieces from Itálica as well as valuable mosaics.

The Museum of Fine Arts of Seville houses works from the 13th to the 20th century, including a particularly valuable collection of Sevillian Baroque paintings. Its programme includes cultural activities, temporary exhibitions and educational workshops. There are also inclusive offerings for all visitor groups. The museums thus combine collections spanning broad periods of time with different forms of interpretation.

Routes and performances

The Parque de María Luisa can be explored on foot, by bicycle or in a horse-drawn carriage. In Seville's streets and squares, themed routes allow visitors to explore historic corners shaped by art and culture. Flamenco is another distinctive form of expression in the city: flamenco performances can be experienced every day at the famous tablaos, in neighbourhood peñas, at themed venues and in certain bars.

Getting there

Seville Airport is about 15 minutes from the city centre by private or hire car, as well as by taxi; by bus, the journey takes about 35 minutes. Santa Justa railway station is currently served by AVE high-speed trains from Córdoba, Madrid, Zaragoza and Barcelona, as well as by AVANT trains from Málaga.
