Holiday Apartment in Pilas: Culture, Nature and Routes through Doñana

The Ermita de Nuestra Señora de Belén is considered the historic center around which Pilas developed. Its architectural history, local traditions and natural surroundings give the town several distinct facets.

Culture

The high altar of the Ermita de Nuestra Señora de Belén is a carved and gilded Baroque work. It is traditionally attributed to the sculptor Francisco Dionisio de Ribas and dated to the mid-17th century. The religious building also includes the Marian Chapel, a striking medieval, square brick room with an octagonal vault. Its construction reflects the Andalusian tradition of Sevillian Mudéjar. The ermita itself is dated to the mid-14th century.

Another trace of the town's history leads to the Hacienda del Marqués de la Motilla. This rural building represents Pilas's historic haciendas, which are integrated into the town center; two oil mills are mentioned there for the 18th century. The Torres de Molino are also part of this historic picture: these are oil-mill towers that were already mentioned in the 17th century.

Nature

The Parque Municipal “Alcalde José Suárez Cuesta” is an environmental area within the town of Pilas that opened in 1987. It is home to more than 100 plant species and 50 animal species. The connection with nature extends beyond this: routes through Doñana National Park begin in the natural surroundings of Pilas and can be explored on foot, by bicycle or on horseback.
