Alcolea del Río combines Roman heritage with a landscape shaped by the river and local traditions. Between archaeological remains, religious buildings, paths, and seasonal events, the town reveals several distinct facets.

Culture and History

North of Alcolea del Río, in the La Mesa area, lie the remains of the ancient Roman city of Canama; a large number of graves were found there. The Ciudad Romana de Arva is an archaeological attraction and is one of the two Roman settlements associated with Alcolea del Río. The archaeological remains of the Roman settlement of Arva near Alcolea del Río include bathing facilities, pools, and fluted columns with Corinthian capitals.

A parish church in Alcolea del Río was built in the Gothic-Mudéjar style. The parish church in Alcolea del Río also preserves an 18th-century altarpiece that came from the Church of Santa Ana in Carmona. The single-nave chapel known locally as “El Cristo” dates from the 18th century and is decorated with flower pots from the neighborhood in front of its whitewashed façade.

The Arab mills of La Aceña are also part of the town’s history. They are of Arab origin and were still in use during this century. At present, visitor access is severely restricted because of the poor condition of the walkways and floors. The Mercado Medieval takes place in the last week of November or the first week of December.

Landscape and Paths

Opposite the built-up area of Alcolea del Río, the banks of the Corbones, a former course of the Guadalquivir, feature a natural riverside forest and form a natural area of considerable landscape and ecological value. Alcolea del Río also has a natural landscape shaped by a river, which contrasts with the surrounding olive, orange, and peach groves.

Calle Betis offers a walking route along the banks of the Guadalquivir. The “ALCOLEA DEL RIO – VILLANUEVA DEL RIO Y MINAS: CIRCULAR SIERRA NORTE-VEGA ETAPA 10” stage is a 7.5 km linear route of low difficulty. The “Circular Sierra Norte-Vega Etapa 10” route is accessible on foot, by bicycle, and on horseback, is signposted, and has a distance of 0 m from the town center.

Getting There

From Seville, the drive follows the A-4 motorway and exit 506 near Carmona. From there, continue via the SE-4107 and SE-4104 roads to Alcolea del Río.

Alcolea del Río can be reached via Seville’s C3 railway line and by buses departing from the Plaza de Armas bus station. The station is located outside the town center and has no public transport connection.
