Coria del Río: Vacation Apartment Between Nature and Culture

Coria del Río lies on the right bank of the Guadalquivir River, about 12 kilometers south of Seville. The municipality also includes the Paraje Natural del Brazo del Este. The town and its municipality are home to cultural sites as well as paths through the landscape.

Culture and History

The Iglesia de Santa María de la Estrella is the oldest parish church in Coria del Río. Its Gothic-Mudejar architecture dates from the late 13th century and was expanded with Baroque additions. The church is protected as a Bien de Interés Cultural. Another notable site is the Ermita de San Juan Bautista on the eastern edge of Cerro de San Juan above the Guadalquivir River. It houses the Santísimo Cristo de la Vera Cruz, a sculpture created around 1500. The Ermita is designated as a monument and Bien de Interés Cultural.

The Casa de Blas Infante is also part of the town’s history. Blas Infante designed and built it in 1931; in 2006, it was declared a Bien de Interés Cultural in the Monumento category. Visits to the Casa de Blas Infante are always guided and require advance reservation. At the Museo de la Autonomía de Andalucía, the permanent exhibition in Sala 28F traces the Andalusian autonomy process from the Antequera Constitution of 1883 to the ratification of the Statute of Autonomy for Andalusia in the 2007 referendum.

A special cultural connection leads to Japan. The statue of Hasekura Tsunenaga on Paseo Carlos de Mesa was donated by the government of the Japanese city of Sendai. The Sala Temática Japonesa Virginio Carvajal Japón displays reproductions of documents from Hasekura Tsunenaga’s voyage, as well as Japanese artistic and traditional objects. It also contains a model of the Hanami, which was given to the town by Japan’s pavilion and created on the occasion of the 1992 Seville World Expo; it was on display there throughout the entire exhibition.

Nature and Trails

The municipality can be explored along various routes. The Ruta ornitológica passes through Coria del Río and is used for observing and identifying birds, including along the Guadalquivir and Guadaira rivers, in the Paraje Natural del Brazo del Este and in the Dehesa La Atalaya. The Sendero nocturno is an approximately 3-kilometer circular trail through the Dehesa La Atalaya and is suitable for individuals and families.

The Aula de la Naturaleza can be reached via the Corredor Verde Metropolitano de Sevilla and the livestock trail Vereda de los Palacios on foot, by bicycle, on horseback or using another non-motorized means of transport. The Sendero Dehesa Atalaya can be walked independently using the municipality’s accompanying booklet or with a guide requested from the environmental department. In addition, this trail offers an approximately 3-kilometer guided tour through the dehesa with environmental interpretation activities.

River and Landscape Routes

The Ruta fluvial on the Guadalquivir River is carried out by boat and stops at several points of interest. The Ruta geohistórica conveys the historical transformation of the landscape of Coria del Río. In addition, the Ruta botánica leads through the town’s natural areas, including to the Aula de la Naturaleza in the Dehesa La Atalaya.

Coria del Río is part of the Ruta de Blas Infante, which connects nine municipalities associated with his life and Andalusianism. Coria del Río also offers a route dedicated to Hasekura Tsunenaga. Alongside the individual cultural sites, thematic trails are therefore available that link the town’s history, regional connections and landscape.

Places Along the Paseo and Cultural Venue

The Paseo Carlos de Mesa and its pier on Calle Martínez de León are among the places in Coria del Río worth visiting. The Centro Cultural de la Villa »Pastora Soler« is available for events as a public cultural institution with an open-air theater and a covered theater. Its program includes cultural events such as concerts, theater performances, conferences, courses, exhibitions and book presentations.
