Palma del Río: Alcazaba, Museums and River Routes

Palma del Río showcases protected architectural heritage, river landscapes, trails and museums. The walled area is protected as an Asset of Cultural Interest (Bien de Interés Cultural) in the category of Historic Complex.

Culture and History

The Museo Municipal has been housed in the Caballerizas building since 1995. It comprises four departments covering archaeology, ethnography, art and the world of bullfighting. Five permanent exhibition halls are dedicated to prehistory, antiquity, the Middle Ages, traditional occupations and the art collections.

The Convento de Santa Clara was founded on 13 March 1498 by a founding bull signed by Pope Alexander VI. The building combines Mudéjar, Renaissance and Baroque styles. Its square cloister, lined with arcades, is considered the architectural element of greatest artistic value.

Another facet of the former convent is showcased by the Museo Victorio & Lucchino–Santa Clara. The creative legacy of Victorio & Lucchino is presented in the former convent’s most distinguished rooms. The exhibition includes 60 iconic pieces from collections spanning the designers’ entire creative careers and shows the process of creating a garment, from the first idea to its appearance on the catwalk.

The Alcazaba is part of the historic defensive architecture: an Almoravid military fortress with four towers connected by stretches of wall. There is also a larger fifth tower, known as the albarrana tower, called Mesa de San Pedro. The western side bordered the Genil riverbed directly, which served as a defensive moat.

The Teatro Coliseo is a cultural venue with a capacity of 787 spectators. Since 1984, Palma del Río has also hosted the Palma Feria de Artes Escénicas de Andalucía, which brings together professionals from theatre, dance and other artistic fields. The Casa Museo Manuel Benítez “El Cordobés” is considered an educational and leisure facility for visitors and conveys the bullfighter’s story as a history of struggle and overcoming adversity.

River Landscapes and Nature

Around Palma del Río, the Los Cabezos Peri-Urban Park encompasses well-preserved Mediterranean woodland with holm oaks and wild olive trees. The park is surrounded by the Retortillo stream. It also features recreational areas, children’s playgrounds and picnic areas.

At the confluence of the Guadalquivir and Genil, the area is considered an ecologically valuable site with a large number of water birds nesting on two river islands. Birds, rabbits and hares can be observed along the “Un Paseo por las Delicias” route.

The Huerto garden of the Alcázar Palacio Portocarrero preserves its original irrigation system. Its plants include citrus varieties ranging from old native varieties to unusual species from around the world. The Alcázar Palacio Portocarrero can be visited daily by prior appointment; visitors can explore its historic courtyards and rooms.

Trails and Discoveries

The “Un Paseo por el Guadalquivir” route is 3.8 km long, takes around one hour on foot and has a low level of difficulty. It begins after crossing the old bridge over the Guadalquivir, near the Centro de Interpretación del Río and below the Ermita de Belén. It then passes Palma del Río railway station and follows an unpaved path westwards, from which the Guadalquivir can be seen.

The different routes can be compared by duration, trail characteristics and landscape views. The “Paisajes de la Campilla” route offers panoramic views over the Campiña landscape, which encompasses the areas of La Algaba and La Jara.

Local Produce

The traditional Huerta palmeña on the banks of the Genil includes various types of fruit, such as lemons, pomegranates, plums, Perilla de San Juan, persimmons, figs and grapes. Vegetables include tomatoes, lettuce, cauliflower, peppers and broad beans.
