Holiday apartment in La Rinconada: parks, archaeology and cycle paths

La Rinconada combines extensive green spaces, active routes and a remarkable archaeological past. Between the river park, urban art, historic buildings and lively festivals, a multifaceted picture of Andalusia emerges, bringing together nature, culture and local traditions.

Nature and activities

Parque El Majuelo is a river park that has been expanded to cover 210,000 square metres. Connected to this park is the Eje del Agua, a more than 20-kilometre-long walking and cycling route that links Parque El Majuelo with Parque de Las Graveras. In addition, La Rinconada has a cycle-path network approximately 40 kilometres long.

Parque Central de La Unión is also one of the municipality’s larger open spaces. The 2.8-hectare green area includes walking and cycling paths, recreational areas and a body of water. In conjunction with the Guadalquivir, Parque El Majuelo is also used for rowing and canoeing. One body of water is used for training in rescue operations, open-water swimming and water tests in triathlon and ultra-endurance competitions.

Culture and history

Within the municipality of La Rinconada, Cerro Macareno is protected as an archaeological zone and as an Asset of Cultural Interest (Bien de Interés Cultural). The artificial settlement mound preserves the remains of a Tartessian and Turdetanian settlement from the 1st millennium BC. The Museo Arqueológico y Paleontológico “Francisco Sousa” displays pottery from Cerro Macareno dating from the 8th to the 1st century BC; these include Tartessian, Phoenician, Greek, Iberian and Roman pieces.

Historic buildings include the Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de las Nieves, a 15th-century Mudéjar church. La Rinconada Town Hall is an example of Andalusian regionalist architecture. The Museo Urbano al Aire Libre offers a more contemporary perspective on the local culture: it can be explored on a walk along catalogued urban-art interventions. The artistic interventions include paintings and sculptures on façades, in neglected areas, on transformers and at roundabouts, and extend across various neighbourhoods of La Rinconada.

Scientific engagement with the past is also present. In La Rinconada, the University of Seville and UNED hold a seminar every year, around November, on current developments in palaeontology and archaeology. More than 200 people take part.

Festivals and food

The Feria del Abrazo is part of La Rinconada’s recurring seasonal festival calendar. Another established tradition is the Romería de San Isidro, an annual pilgrimage from the San José parish church to El Toril, held on the first weekend of October each year. During this pilgrimage, participants share food in El Toril and spend the afternoon there before returning to San José.

In La Rinconada, the Fiesta de la Patata is associated with the start of the potato harvest and includes the tasting of a potato-and-meat stew. The Hacienda Guzmán living olive museum offers another insight into regional agriculture and includes more than 150 different olive varieties.

Getting there

The Cercanías C1 line between Seville and Lora del Río provides access to La Rinconada and El Cáñamo stations in San José de La Rinconada.
