Casa Bonsor in the Castillo de Mairena del Alcor combines visible architectural history with museum remembrance: it was extensively restored, and Bonsor’s original museum design was reinstated. At the same time, access for the public to the building, the collections and the history was made easier. Thus, the focus is not only on the castle’s external appearance, but also on the connection between its rooms, the preserved collections and the history of the place.

A visit to the Castillo de Mairena del Alcor must be reserved at least one week in advance. Technical aids and suitable paths have also been provided for visits to the historical heritage, making access easier for people with reduced mobility. These specific conditions are just as much a part of engaging with the historic sites as their names and the stories passed down about them.

Culture

In the Iglesia Mayor Santa María de la Asunción, two particularly well-documented pieces are preserved in the sacristy: a chalice renewed in Manila in 1787 and a painting of the Virgin of Guadalupe by Juan Correa. The origins of this same church in Mairena del Alcor are dated to the period between the 14th and 15th centuries. Thus, a sacred building brings together both the temporal depth of its origins and specific works of art and objects of worship from different historical contexts.

History

The Casa Palacio de los Duques de Arcos also leads into the older history of Mairena del Alcor. It is believed to have been founded in the 15th century. Only a courtyard surrounded by colonnades remains of the former palace. This surviving structural element is also associated with a precisely dated event: the Catholic Monarchs spent the night at the Casa Palacio de los Duques de Arcos on 5 June 1500. The history of the building is therefore evident both in its surviving architecture and in the documented stay of this ruling couple.

Landscape

The Castillo de Mairena del Alcor is situated on a hill popularly known as Castillo de Luna. This hill is equidistant from the present-day public fountains “Gorda” and “Alconchel”. The Mirador de los Molinos offers a view of the Vega. Marine fossils are frequently found in the calcarenite used to produce albero. As a result, the hill, viewpoint, plain and rock form part of a landscape in which local names are connected with visible geological and spatial features.

Routes

Mairena del Alcor is part of the Ruta de la Vía Verde de Los Alcores. The town also lies along the Ruta de Washington Irving, which is promoted by the Fundación El Legado Andalusí. Both route references form part of the town’s supraregional classification, without designating the same route or the same historical context.

Traditions

The Molinos Harineros de Campo form a hydraulic complex of four mills. They were supplied with water from the public fountains Alconchel and Gorda through underground tunnels. The connection between mills, grain and local food culture also includes the quality of the flour from the harvests of the comarca: it is considered one of the secrets behind the taste and texture of Mairena’s bread.

Another well-established tradition is the Festival de Cante Jondo Antonio Mairena. It is a traditional Jondo-style flamenco festival commemorating the flamenco singer Antonio Mairena. The festival has been classified as a Festival of Tourist Interest in Andalusia. Thus, the cultural heritage of the place extends from sacred works of art and historic buildings to an event expressly dedicated to Jondo flamenco.
