Discover Osuna: Art, History and Holiday Apartments
Osuna is a ducal town and has been designated a historical-artistic ensemble. Its historic town centre is characterised by a rich monumental heritage and typically Sevillian, whitewashed buildings. You can organise the topics by buildings, periods and types of events, without specifying a fixed itinerary.
Culture
The Colegiata de Osuna was founded in 1535, after D. Juan Téllez Girón, the 4th Count of Ureña, obtained a papal bull by which the parish church at the time also became a collegiate church. Ashlar stone quarried from the quarries of Osuna was used for its construction. On 10 October 1548, Pope Paul III authorised the establishment of an Estudio General in Osuna under the patronage of the Immaculate Conception through the bull “In Supereminenti Apostolicae Sedis”.
The Museo Arqueológico de Osuna is now located in a tower of the 12th-century Almohad walls, which was rebuilt in the 14th century by the Knights of the Order of Calatrava. Its first hall displays prehistoric remains as well as reproductions of Iberian reliefs found in Osuna. The Museo de Osuna also includes a “Salón de Hielo y Fuego”, dedicated to the series “Game of Thrones”.
The late-antique necropolis of Osuna is an open-air site and can be visited free of charge every day. The caves of the necropolis are predominantly attributed to the Palaeochristian period. Osuna’s Semana Santa was recognised in 1999 as a “Fiesta de Interés Turístico Nacional de Andalucía”. You can distinguish between religious architecture, archaeology, religious tradition and museum-related aspects.
Landscape
The Canteras de Osuna are former quarries on the site of ancient Urso and are known as the “Petra of Andalusia” because of their spectacular stone reliefs. In Coto Las Canteras, a natural auditorium was used, among other things, for television shoots, concerts, recitations, charity galas and cultural talks.
If you would like to compare different impressions, historical traces, shaped landscapes and cultural event formats can be considered as separate focal points. This leaves room for your own weighting between the history of the town, archaeological topics and special locations.
